whistle sound with 4x4 engaged
Hey everybody,
I have a 2000 F250SD, 4x4, V-10, 3.73 gears, supercab, longbed. My problem is a whistling sound when I switch from 4x4 to 4x2. The truck is perfect in 4x2 mode. It runs perfect in 4x4 mode. When I switch from 4x4 back to 4x2 there is a loud whistling sound from up front underneath the truck. If I come to a stop and then start off again, the sound is there. Here's the funny thing. If I stop the truck, make sure its in 4x2, shut it off, when I restart, the sound disappears. All the fluid levels are fine. Maybe its a vacuum problem?
Please help,
Howard

I had the same problem w/my 00 250 4x4 SC at around 16,000 miles. The dealer replaced all of the front axle guts. It did the trick although who knows if that was the correct fix? They might do whatever they can to bill more warranty hours to Ford. I traded that one in at 16,600 miles - too soon to see if the problem came back. Good luck!

When I first encountered the problem on my truck, I tried going backward too without any joy. In fact I almost had to do it that way. I drove from the back of my property up a hill in 4L to my driveway - which has a 40' straight section there. Once level and on pavement I went to 2H. Driving forward (straight) caused the squeal. I backed up (straight) about 30' and going forward again caused the squeal again. I did it a bunch of times - even going back to 4L to start over. The squeal would mysteriously go away after a minute or so tho ... every time.
p.s. Howard, your subject says "with 4x4 engaged" but your post says "from 4->2 then noise". I am describing a problem
that matches your post, not the subject.

I just got my truck back from the dealer, having the same problem you described. What they found was that the bearings had to be replace, some shaft had to be replaced, and the vacuum seals that engage 4x4 had to be replaced. After having my truck for 4 days (I use it for work), they finally had it ready for me at 5p.m. on a friday, with a bill for $721.00. The truck has 44,000 miles on it, it is 20 months old, and it is starting to nickle and dime me. "SUPERDUTY" I don't think so. This is not all that I am having problems with. Brad

Thanks everybody,
I appreciate the responses. I was hoping it would be simple solution but it looks like I will be in the shop getting some front axle work done. What else in new. I will keep you posted.
FTE is great site and the people who visit are even better
Thanks
Howard
