Um, sorry but, you didn't get 20hp from a flowmaster muffler, never go by a company's dyno or advertised hp ratings. The FE engine is completely something else, I wont get into that...

Stock 89 had 185 hp...you're well below that after this many miles, but that's what it was rated at from the factory.

ya, putting mufflers on isn't going to do much other than sound. Milage also doesn't really matter as long as the rings are in good shape and same with valve job, and there is a good tune (fresh plugs/wires/cap/rotor).

I disagree about the exhaust not affecting milage. I put dual exhaust on both my Bronco and F-150 and they both got 1-2 mpg more per tank. The new exhaust release some of the backpressure...therefore freeing up some ponies. You just have to get a good flow through muffler and I highly recommend an aftermarket catalytic converter.

I don't believe he was trying to say a muffler wouldn't help mpg...a new exhaust system will surely give more power, but not the 20 hp that they advertise. Usually a new exhaust system improves mileage a little because of the power gain, but is usually negated by the fact that people rev them up more and all to hear it roar

yeah 20 hp is a bit excessive for just adding a cat-back, but I think 10 hp is achievable and with headers, 20+ hp is very achievable

true...I know I love the sound of my truck in 1st-3rd gear...that and the looks that I get from ricers is priceless

I don't think 70k miles is going to lose a noticeable amount of hp. When I checked the compression of mine with 110,000 miles all cyls were 185-190psi dry.

On my 5.0 SEFI powered truck adding headers and a full exhaust made a very real difference in power and gas mileage. With 70k miles I don't think your power will be down much from new as long as it's regularly tuned up.

The dude was talking about mufflers guys, not a full exhaust with headers, larger piping, no cats etc....yes you will get gains in mpg and a nice jump in power with a full exhaust. Now will you get much over a couple hp with just a muffler? NO.

Well I put a whole new system on my truck, new cats, new pipes all the way back with 2 40 flowmasters 2.50 pipes with it droping off before the axle till i can get more money to put them out the back. since i had that done it's got a ton more power and pick up that tilts the rear end and burns out when stepped on hard. Getting on the highway is so easy 75mph in no time from a 35mph ramp. so i would say it feels like 20hp more.
