Coming from the mustang world, Most guys I know are actually tending to move away from flowmasters and onto other brands... especially once people realize that Flowmasters don't "flow" very well... Most guys I know are going to Turbo style mufflers like Borla, Bassani, Magnaflow, and Dynomax. Personally Borla, Bassani, and Magnaflow are kinda pricey.. most of theirs are made from stainless steel and some even come fully polished. Dynomax is more on the low end of the price scale but are very very very popular. Most people I know are running the Ultra-flow welded also known as the race magnum. You can get it in aluminumized steel or in stainless. For me, living in the south, stainless does nothing for me except cost me more $$$$ since I have never had a muffler rust out on me... If you live up North with roadsalt then stainless is the only way to go.

All the turbo mufflers basically have the same design.. a tube goes from one end of the muffler straight out the other end of the muffler.. but the tube inside the muffler has thousands of little holes in it allowing air to flow through fiberglass matting surrrounding the main tube thus quieting the tone down.. the bigger the muffler, the more matting, and the quieter it is.. And it goes the other way too.. the smaller the muffler, the less matting material and the louder it is...

I have these

very loud! quieter on the inside than even 3 chamber flowmasters and almost as loud as single chamber flowmasters on the outside... I love em!

go to www.dynomax.com and they have sound files of different vehicle with these mufflers on them.. including a 5.4 expedition

Scott, and everyone else too actually.........just a little tip here.....if you want to add something to a post you can edit your post within 60 minutes of then you first posted it. The bandwidth being used on the site has really grown lately and little things like this can help.
I screw up sometimes and make a new post too instead of editing the original one but I'm trying to learn better
lol

I have a 97 F-150 with a 40 series Flowmaster right after the cat and then dual outputs to the back and it sounds great.

You need to check out gibson's stainless steel exhaust. You don't buy anything by going to duals. Buy a whole system that is MADE for your truck. Don't go to the next muffler shop and have them bend something together and slap it on there. It likely will dangle and move around at 20mph making you look like a moron. I always have to shake my head, looking at the poor souls that do such things to their brand new trucks.

Cheers, George

Thumbs up

On my '98 4.6L F150 I have the Gibson 3" single side cat-back exhaust system. It sounds great, nice deep mellow sound and not too loud at higher speeds/RPMS. Other than the questionable welds that my buddy did I am 100% satisfied with this system....props to the folks at Gibson.

I wouldn't count out all custom exaust shops too soon. Alot of shops do quality work for less than a bolt on kit. Ask around, you'll find a good shop.

I would have to suggest looking into the borla, quiet at idle but when you get on it, it gives a very loud throaty sound.

Custom shops do a good job if you go to a "qualtiy one"....i had an 88 f150 that i put 40 series single in dual out and they did a great job....it surly didn't "flop" around at 20 mph.....i would of freaked out. Thanks for the info........borla, or gibson, or flowmaster.........firefighter 1406..your truck sounds good you said.....some people say that they sound like there under water....is that true?

i have a 97 f150 with flomaster duals and i think it sounds awesome. i went to a custom shop and had them use flowmaster mufflers with thier own metal tubing and it came out a lot cheaper than a premade kit or the mail order ones that cost a lot of money. they are really deep sounding at slower speeds and a rumble at high rpms but in the mid range they tend to be sleepers.
