No rear brakes (Please help)

I'm new to this but I have no rear brakes in my 84 F-250 4x4. I found out the hard way (don't ask) any way I put the truck in 4 lo and the front brakes could not stop the truck I'm thinking it is the Brake Proportioning Valve because when I try to bleed the brakes no fluid comes to the bleeders.

make sure you have lots of fluids in your master cylinder and then take your bleeders out their might be some junk in the bleeders.

yea I have seen many bleeder screws that were so loaded with rust and mud that nothing would come out, replacements are cheap, take an old one with you so you get the right piece parts

Im suprised the front brakes would not hold your truck since they do about 85% of the stopping in a pick-up truck, might wanna check that idle speed

You should also check the rear rubber line on this truck. I've seen those lines collapse on the inside only allowing very little if any fluid to pass through. Might be easier to check that than replacing the Proportioning valve, which very seldom fail. Just a suggestion.

Well its probably the Valve then. Are those things even still available anymore? I don't believe anybody makes them aftermarket, and unless the Ford dealer in your area is pretty cool about looking up older parts. The Fold dealer in my area wouldn't even help with a radio problem on a 95 Explorer, they told me if it's more than 3 years old they wouldn't even have the catalogs for those parts anymore.

Ford still has the valve least they did last spring my firends truck needed a new one I think it was around a 100 bucks tho. Thats riduclious that ford dealer said they dont have the catulques for anything older then 3 years by law they have to supply parts for anything they made up to i belive 20 years it might be ten but its deffintly more then 3 thats for sure. Some deelers just dont have good parts deptartments. while other have really good ones. If ya are insstent ya can ussually get what yar after tho.

Some of the proportioning valves have a safety device that will shut off either of the two circuits if there is a leak. It is a sliding valve in the proportioning valve that must be centered to allow fluid to flow through both circuits. If you have the valve and try to bleed the brakes then it will activate thus keeping any fluid from flowing.

Good luck,

Mark
