I have a 1997 Expedition 4x4 with a 4.6 engine. According to the posts, I have a 4R70. I wanted to make sure this is true fro "both" 2WD and 4WD?

Thanks,
Leo

You need a 4R70W transmission. I don't have prices, and you won't find a new one. There hasn't been a new one available for a 2000 since 2000.

swapping trans

Now we have established which trans the early Expos came with can we use the 4.6 trans in a 5.4 truck? I have a 2000 4.6 Expo but the engine gave out 20k miles after i had trans rebuilt. I bought a 99 with a 5.4 but the trans slips a bit. Rather tgan rebuild this trans can I just put my rebuilt trans in it?

It depends. The 5.4L truck might have a 4R70W or it might have a 4R100. A 4.6L 4R70W should work if the truck had a 4R70W, but it will NOT work if it had a 4R100.

2. All Expeditions prior to 2003, that have the 5.4L v-8, use the 4R100 transmission. In all cases, you should use Mercon and NOT MERCON V in it.

This information is based on comprehensive research and some healthy reference to Mark Kowalsky, the resident transmission guru.

Now--have we figured out the 2003+ trannies? Do they all have 4R70W trannies using Mercon V?
For the 4R100 you can use Mercon V. Ford did a TSB that allows this to happen. I have switched to Mercon V myself on my 04 Navi at 150k miles. Here is the process from the Mark himself

99' Ford Expedition transmission issue

OK I'm having an issue with my 99' Ford Expedition transmission, I believe it's a 4RW70 transmission and it shifts from 1st to 2nd just fine when it goes to 3rd it shifts to neutral no lock up for say. Any ideas? I traced the wireing and connections look to be OK no torn or worn wires, also hooked up to a computer and no transmission codes came up. any help you'll be appreciated thanks
