Didn't these older cars need special leaded gas?

Yes, they all required leaded gas until catalytic convertors showed up.

Hardened seats for the valves is all thats required to work well with modern fuel. Original heads didnt have hardened seats, and from what i have read, the heat effected them and they would crack from the high temps.
