which engine to build

I currently have a 351c in my 65 effie. I'm trying to decide if i should rebuild that or a 360. The Clevland runs great now but i just don't know what's in it. I've heard that the C is more for HP and the 360 is for torque. It's not an everyday truck. I want a combination of both torque and HP.

Are you kidding, you have a 351C? That is one hot V-8 and the 360 is one heavy boat anchor. If it was me I'd wouldn't even let the thought cross my mind of gettin rid of that engine, but you say you don't know whats in it, well just rebuild from ground up since you are gonna rebuild anyway. One question though, are sure you have a 351C? I never knew those were put in trucks, you'd more likely have 352 or 351M, although I'm not completly sure if the 351M's were in production yet. But your right that the 351C is high horsepower engine, but if it's built up it'll be just fine.

Watch what you say about that 360, you'll get people po'd really quick. I know mine goes like a bat outta ....

If you have a 351c it's a swap in. They were never put in trucks. Why someone would waste one on a truck is beyond me.

If it really is a 351c, I'd say use it. More than likely, I think you've got a 352, which the only difference between that and a 360 is .050" bore size. 352 = 4.0" bore, 360 = 4.050".

Check and see if the block extends below the centerline of the crankshaft. If it does, post it in the FE forum and we can help you immensely there. They CAN be built up to be monsters, and it's relatively easy to change your 352 or 360 to a 390.

360s outpowered the C's easily...buy about 50 hp and 70 ft.lbs. Now you want some juice, build the 360 to a 390 and youll learn what over 395 ft lbs feels like in stock form.

yes am sure it's a 351C. The valve cover has eight bolts. That engine didn't come in this truck, my dad put it in there. It came out of a mustang. Why did Rusty say waste it and put it in a truck. Was that a bad choice or what? Would you go with the 360 in the truck?

It's a waste because the 351C is a smallblock, and 352/360/390 are much heavier motors. People love those 351C's for cars to save weight and get bigblock power (the 351C is easy to setup with 4V heads for big big power).

I have a 390 in my 78, and boy does it turn those 38's like no other. You can get 400 HP and over 400 lbs of torque easy with a 390. Tons of low end torque for those brake stands.

one point no one has mentioned is the trany wont bolt up. if it is an auto you need another trany, but a manual "can" be done with just a bellhousing.

You said the tranny won't bolt up to the 360. You are not talking about a C^ specify what you mean by tranny won't bolt up.

I've only heard bad things about the 351M and a little better about the 360, but for me it's the 390, in my book it's the best engine ever made by ford. Anyway, I think you will have some bolt up problems, but if it were me I'd keep the Clev. and build it up then run a 3 speed on the floor.

If your wanting to know about bolt up problems between the FE motors and your 351c, The C is a small block, 6 bolt bellhousing, it's mor of a box shape(so to speak) on top. The FE is pretty much round on top. so basicly if you went from the Clievland to the 360/390, and you've got an automatic, you need a whole new tranny. go to a junk yard and ask one of the guys there to see the bellhousing for both and you'll see what I mean.
