Trans shifting

My last truck had an AOD in it. This new tranny seems to have four gears PLUS overdrive. Is this the case or does it really slip a bunch going into OD???

It has four gears and a lockup torque convertor. As near as i can figure out it shifts under normal throtle like this . First gear, second gear, third gear, torque convertor lockup, then the last shift is forth gear.If you are on the throtle hard the above does not apply.
Hope this helps.

Mike,
That makes a lot of sense, I hadnt considered that yet. I also have a 5.0 mustang with a 3000 stall NON-lockup convertor, so I am new to the whole electronic w/lock up trannies. I was hoping it wasnt lemon syndrome. Thanks!
