How has the V10 done for everyone as an engine? Does it get the gas mileage that everyone thinks that it should? If you have one, would you buy one again or would you get a PSD? I am having a hard time deciding between the 2 for an F-250SD Crew Cab. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

 

I got one of the early 99's with piston slap. Started at about 16k. Ford replaced it at 42k. I have 65K now and have no problems. There is plenty of power for my needs. I get 12.3-12.8 mpg in the city. Over all the truck has been OK.

 

I've got a 2000 CC 4X4, 3.73, auto, heavy duty everything. On the last trip to Dallas, with a 20 mph headwind, 75mph, 13.5 mpg. Trips to New Orleans, 80 mph, cruise on, 4 full size adults, with a weeks worth of luggage and junk, average 15.5 mpg. I've got no complaints, other than minor items for the dealer to fix under warranty. I switched to 5W30 Mobil 1 at 10k, this engine performs way better than I expected. I will say the gas mileage was not an issue when the 6500# truck was purchased, although every little bit helps. I think it was a better truck for me than the diesel next to it would have been.

 

I was in the same situation you are in. I went with the V10. I picked up my special order on 6/25/01. It is a 2001 F250 Crew Cab Short Bed 4X4 V10, Island Green with Silver. I got it to tow a 28 foot traval trailer that weights 6500 lbs. My first fillup w/o towing gave me 12.77 Miles/gal. 2nd fillup w/o trailer got 13.94. 3rd, after towing trailer 311 miles gave me 9.32 m/Gal. 4th. fillup was today after vacation driving and towing the trailer home gave me 10.96. This is with no filter changes or exhaust changes. Just straight from the factory. The truck now has 1065 miles on it and i love it. It towed like a dream, and that is why I got it. A PSD would give you around 20 M/Gal so I have read, but it cost $4,000 more. Good luck on your decision an let me know what you decide on.

My 99 v10 has been good. Started with 3.73 gears and factory tires it could easily get 13 mpg highway at 70 mph. Swapped to 4.10 gears and 33 x12.5 tires now the best it gets on the highway is 11.8 at 70 mph.

207,000 miles problem free. At 207 I replaced the intake gasket due to some wetness starting from a coolant leak. So good so far since then. The fix was less than $200 in parts which included new sparkies.

 

I had a 99' and just sold to a buddy and bought a new 6.8.
It was a great truck. Never broke and apart from $20 oil changes and 12mpg overall I have no complaints.
I drove a 6.2 and it didn't have the grunt down low that I was used to. So I bought the last 6.8 they had on the lot.

 

I love my V10. Only major issue with it so far is the typical snapping of exhaust manifold bolts. I am getting all of them replaced next month. Other than that she is a power house. Wish fuel economy was a little better (I hit around 12-14 mpg, hit 16 mpg going from PA to OBX) but I didnt buy it for fuel economy, I bought it to use it as it was intended for.....to haul/tow stuff. I have about 99,000 miles on it to.
