56steering box

I have a lot of play in the manual steering box on my 56. Is there a replacement box available, or can i have this one rebuilt? Is this a difficult job?

I just went thru this with my '56 f600. My local parts store couldn't find one for me and their rebuilder said mine was to far gone to rebuild. I've ended up putting in a later box out of a junkyard truck. If you have play in the wheel some of it can be adjusted out by the screw and locknut on the side of the box. Back off the locknut and turn the screw in 1/4 turn tighten the locknut and try it. Don't go to tight as things in the gearbox will wear quickly. (maybe this has already happened to your box) My rebuilder said they can do it as long as no "sticky spots" are there when you turn the wheel. In my case everything left of center was sticky.

Hi

If it's a F100 a lot of the suppliers have the steering box's and parts. You may want to consider changing over to a toyota power steering kit.

Hi

Yes I think it is expensive to change to p/s but rebuilding the stock box isn't cheap.

I have never installed the toyota gear but I know No Limit Engineering has a kit maybe you should call them.

You can also put the toyota manual steering box in and just have to change the pitman arm. No hoses or PS pump.

John, check out this site for the Toyota conversion. http://www.f100connection.com Look under the Tech section. They offer the bracket, the pitman arm etc. The one they sell is a weld in bracket but CPP also offers a bolt in version. If you search for Classic Performance products their site should come up.

I am in the process of doing this to my 56 but am going with power steering. I got the box, pump etc for $100.00 Cdn from a guy parting out his Toyota. I made my own bracket but haven't done the pitman arm yet. I believe the applicable years ar 1979- 1985.

Good luck.
