I had wondered the same thing before making a purchase (stepped up from a 150 to 350). This site is an invaluable resource. When you have some time, browse through it - there's more info than you could imagine and plenty to reference that is specific to your question. The only serious problem that I am aware of, thanks to this site, is the piston slap on pre-April '99 V10's.

The piston slap is one issue. I hate to knock the Superduty trucks because I think they are great but here are some other common complaints. Crewcab floor knocking/popping(seems to go away because mine used to do it but now it doesn't) 4x4 front springs squeaking, 4x4 front brake problems, exhaust flutter,(V10's Ford supposedly fixed) All of these are more of an annoyance than major problem. I would still recomend the Ford.

I have a 2001 F-250 Crew-cab with a V-10. I have not had any problems with the truck yet. I got it Jan. 29th and have 6300 miles on it. I've heard of oil problems(burning a quart every 1000 miles) but I have not had any problems at all. I also have been getting around 11-12 mpg around town, and i just got 11.6 mpg pulling my boat 270 miles( all highway). I love the truck. Best of luck.

I've had a F250SD V10 since 3-98. I had the piston slap problem, and my dealer replaced the engine at at about 23,000 miles with no hassle whatsoever, except they gave me a GM loaner car (it was the last loaner left). Other than that, I've had no powertrain problems and would highly recommend the V10. Around here the dealers can't keep them in stock, and can't give away the diesels.

I got my F250 SD V-10 in Oct.00 and have had problems with the power steering box leaking. I had to take it back twice before this problem was corrected, I told the dealer that I was concerned with this wanting to put bigger tires on but they assured me that this was not a big problem.

I have heard that using the overdrive (automatic)constantly will burn up the tranny but I have yet to prove that.

My 10 gets 10's-11's mpg, I have tried to improve on this but not had any luck with aftermarket equip.

MIRRORS are my problem! My SD came with the small fold in mirrors. Please do not accept these mirrors they do not have convexed glass on the pass. side. I almost ran someone over on the way home from the dealer! There is a terrible blind spot on that right side and I added a shell to my truck that made it worse. I have complained to everyone under the sun about these mirrors and Ford 100% customer satisfaction blew me off several times! I have even offered to pay the $100 option to get the big mirrors but they want me to pay it all. They even offered a kit so you could do both mirrors for a hundred cheaper ($300).

I've had my truck since 8/98 and the only problem I've had with the engine is a bad idle air control valve which was replaced under warranty. Oh, and I just noticed a week or two ago that I have a busted exhaust manifold bolt. I'm not sure if it was broke from the factory or what. I get to fix that one since it's now out of warranty with a tad over 40,000 miles. All in all I'm happy with the truck.
