Not sure where to post this, engine swap is probably the closest thing to what I'm trying to do. I have a 1980 F150 4x4 Stepside that I've owned for 20 years, it's tired, time to freshen it up, but I really NEED an F350. But I really like my short bed stepside otherwise I would just trade up to an F350. So I'm currently looking for a donor 350 4x4, what I'm trying to decide is do I shorten the 350 frame & reinstall my cab & bed, or should I mount the spring perches and all associated running gear on my F150 frame (is this even feasible)? Personally I would shorten the 350 frame, driveshaft, etc but I live in the rust belt and everything I've found so far in my price range has a pretty crispy frame or bent from snowplows, cracked & welded, etc. My 150 frame is basically rust free & has never been damaged. My overall question: Is an f150 and f350 frame the same gauge steel? I haven't put two side by side to compare (yet). I don't plan to abuse this truck anymore after I redo it, but I also collect old tractors and I'd like it to be able to tow at most a Cat D2 (trailer, truck, & Cat about 13,500 pounds).
There is a difference between frames, as the lighter the series, the more holes in the frame you will find, to lighten it up. I'm not certain about the guage, but with what you want to haul, I wouldn't want to try it.Something to consider, if you would want to, is to get one with a standard frame, and add an extended cab, then your shortbox. You would have to modify a few things, but it would eliminate the need to cut the frame. I guess something to ask is do you pull goose or rear hitch? that makes a BIG difference as to what the strength of the frame needs to be, you could get away with a little less frame of it isn't on it's back, just the tail. Brakes are a big part of trailer tow, as well as rear frame in regard to the hitch weight. A possibility to consider would be to reinforce the frame somehow, perhaps boxing in with additional frame rail or such, may be too much work, just an idea.
