shudder in reverse

tamarackstyle,
Look for a brake that's too tight, particluarly drum brake on the rear.
Little story about an 82 F-250,4x4 C-6. Intermediate band went out. Decided to rebuilf it myself. Bought a master rebuild kit from O Rielly's. very soon after the rebuild, in soft ground with a 16ft trailer lightly loaded, in reverse, the truck strained real hard to move but it did. went to leave, truck went forward, drove about two blocks. Put it in park to get out and check soemthing.
Get back in, pull shifter into D. Nothing! No engagement any gear, any direction. Pulled the tranny figureing i made a mistake.
The friction material on the low reverse clutches was folded up like an accordian, just wiped em all off. Blamed that as the problem.Oreilly's warranted the kit.
Rebuilt it again - different brand rebuild kit. This time the truck went from straining to shudderiing and jumping in reverse. Got by for a while using the low range for backing up. or maybe it strained in high range and jumped and bucked in low range.
Anyway, let someone else rebuild it this time. Said he couldn't think of anything in the tranny that would make it do that.
Shortly after that i noticed the drivers side rear drum would roll forward (with some effort by hand) but not backwards at all. Near as I can reason this out, when in reverse it tends to "jam".
When i got that truck it didn't have self adjusters on it. figured that out after replacing the master cyl did no good. A friend told me to adjust the rear brakes. I didn't listen to him thinking an 82 had self adjusters.
So to keep the time line straight i replaced the self adjusters before all the tranny problems. Maybe that's why they were off to begin with. The tranny did have some modifications inside. Think it was the forward clutch assembly that had 6 clutches instead of the normal 4.
Check the small things first and save the big bucks.
