Planning an oil change and lube Sunday

Any tips or tricks on performing an oil change and front end lube?
I have not been under the truck as of yet, so if someone has any info on the number of fittings up front. Are there any that are hard to find? (Turn the wheels to right then left type of thing). I purchased some Valvoline 5W30 and a WIX filter... Looking into a dual filter system from performance products in the near future will keep you guys up to date on that. Again thanks in advance for your replies.

There are only 4 greaseable joints on the front end of my 4x4. Get in the front of the truck, and look at the underside facing the rear. You'll see four joints in the steering, two on each side.

The V10 is a piece of cake to change oil for. The drain bolt and filter are within a foot of each other, both easily accessible.

Probably too late for your oil change on Sunday, but, too keep all that oil from running down your arm when you loosen the filter, first poke a small hole into the bottom of the filter with a pointed punch (or phillips screwdriver for those that practice tool abuse). Let the filter drain then remove it.

I'm sure it's been said a million times before but, completely fill the filter with fresh oil before installing.

For those that don't keep a maintenance log (shame!) write the mileage on the filter with a magic marker.

Hmmm interesting. I guess that's just a problem on the V10. I've never had that problem with my 5.4L PowerStroke Gas.

Interesting too. I've never done that. I just make sure there's enough seasonning and croutons in the oil and that the salad is fresh. In fact I've read somewhere (Ford lit.) that it says specifically not to fill up the oil filter. Again this may only apply to the 5.4L Powerstroke Gas so you 5.4L and 6.8L triton users, fill it up.

Oil on the arm must be a V10 problem only. I knew I shoulda got a V8.

Show me the lit where it says not to fill your filter first. What could possibly be the reason for that? When you first fire that engine after an oil change without filling the filter, watch your oil pressure gauge to see how long it takes to get pressure.

Well, you clould always swap your V10 to a V8. I've been trying to find where it said not to fill the oil filter but I can't find it anymore. I was suprised to read it too. My oil gage doesn't show pressure for about 2 to 3 seconds. Not a problem since the 5.4L PSG will run without oil for at least 30 minutes (without load of course). You think that's BS but it's true.

In any case, I know that filling up an oil filter isn't necessary or even possible sometimes. My 4.9L I6 PowerStroke Gas had it's filter mounted horizontally. There's no way to keep oil in the filter while re-installing it. My wifes Lexus's 3.3L PowerStroke Gas also has a horizontally mounted oil filter. (We use her car to tow our 25,000 lbs gooseneck.)

V10, are you able to show Dagwood41 a picture of the 5.4L PowerStroke Gas badges yet?

Now, V10, before you get completely ****ed at me, I'm not saying you shouldn't do it. It makes a lot of sense why you do it. I always thought that the filter should be full too...but obviously not doing it isn't wrong either or my 4.9L and my wife's car would have been long dead. It may have been on my 4.9L's maintenance manual that it said not to fill the oil filter, like I said I can't find it anywhere.

I think my engine really earns the name PowerStroke Gas. It gets 20 mpg EASILY on the highway. (19.89 mpg's last weekend's 600 mile trip.)
