Commercial tags usually means you're pulling a trailer that weighs over 5000 pounds.

Sounds like they are feeding you some serious BS! I also live in New York (Long Island) and do not have commercial plates on my 04 Screw FX4.

We have the same kind of thing in florida and when the dealership went to reg truck thay took it to a sertified scale and it had it weighed it came to 4875lbs and was able to reg it just like a car. It also helped with the price on the allstate bill.

We have a beach house on E. LI that I have been driving to from out of state since I was 16, almost always in a truck, then a friend who lives near the city told me that pickups were not allowed, (no trucks means no trucks of any sort he claimed) on the parkways in the area (Southern, Belt, etc) and that I was breaking the law. Now every tim I wonder if I'll be pulled over and ticketed, but I never have...

If anyone knows the actual law please let me know.

ny weight

In New York they relaxed the truck law so pickups under 5k can register as passenger vehicles and drive on the parkways. With commercial plates I have to go a bit out of my way. The sales guy showed me the paperwork, the o4lariat scab weighed 5336. I will get it weighed though just for giggles. I'm not sure how to go about getting it reclassified though. I guess I'll contact the DMV.

I dont know how nypd classifies out of state vehicles. I have seen Connecticut plates that say combination on them. I dont recall seeing an out of state plate pulled over on any parkway. I have seen alot of trucks pulled over on the Palisades parkway recently. The palisades offers a special permit for pickups not used commercially to travel on the road but it costs (of Course) I think about 90 bucks a yr. I guess thats why they are pulled over, more money!

OK thanks for the info. I took the LIE all the way out once in a U-haul, that was no fun, not that the Belt offers any sort of enjoyment..

Again, I live on Long Island and have a 04 FX4 Crew. I DO NOT have commercial plates and there is no law stating that any vehicle over 5000lbs needs them.

Maybe NYS DMV classifies the screw a passenger vehicle because of the extra seating. There is a law in NY about pickup trucks. Im sure of that. Pataki relaxed it in 2000 so light trucks could use the parkways but the limit is 5000. I just weighed mine this morning and it is 5680. I thought maybe if it was close I could strip it a bit and go for the change. I just have to live with it now. BTW, Mine is a 04 4X4 lariat scab with moonroof.
