if its an auto you will need a trans. also, if its a 4 speed you will need a flywheel/clutch/bellhousing, setup. a real good thing would be a doner truck or acsess to a junk yard . the motor towers/motor mounts need to be changed . its not a hard swap with a doner bob

really its pretty easy, all the electrical is already there. like bob said, motor mounts, bellhousing, radiator and shroud.

actually that is a excellent question: why the FE motor? do you have one spare just laying around?

A better option would be a stroked smallblock for the same cubes. for example a 351w stroked to 393 would get you similar power without all the extra weight from the heavy FE motor.

from what i've seen, there's nuttin wrong w/ the 390...overall, a good motor...mebbe ya'll know somethin i don't?

i'm considering building a rig, and as of yet, ain't real sure what motor i want to put in...what i'm looking at is a 3/4 ton 4x4, and i will have a 300-6 to play with and build up....i currently have an 84 half ton 4x4 w/ a 300, and spare 300 that i'm going to probably build as a stock motor to replace the wore out motor that is currently in the truck, and then turn around and put some money into the motor i pull, and build it up, just as something to "waste" money on, since i already have both motors available to me...i've considered a 351w, but don't have one readily available, and i think i want something with a little more power if i do choose to go with a v-8...i am partial, tho, to the inline six, because it is one helluva motor...i've owned two, and they have yet to let me down on anything i've actually needed them for...

1984 F-150 4x4 300-6 4 spd 3:55 gears...tired old truck, but still a helluva rig, considering the abuse it sustains

nothing at all wrong with a 390. good motor, but in a lighter truck (f100, f150) less weight is better and the 390 is a heavier motor than a smallblock. plus in most half-ton trucks no special work is required to bolt up the smallblocks, but motor mount modification is required for the FE or bigblock engines.

in this case he has a I6 so he will probably have to do some motor mount work no matter which engine he decides to use.

Not true on the last post. No motor mount modification is necessary to swap from say a 300 6 to a FE. Unless you are going with power steering, then the drivers side perch will need to be swapped out. He has a 79 so the perches were the same from 65-79.

Oh, I guess what you might have been saying and that I didn't pick up on (doh) was that the perches will have to be moved back to the next set of holes in the frame. Not a big deal though. no cutting required. If he swaps trannys, he will have to remove the frame crossmember, which is really fun. Get a air chisel to remove the rivets.
