Well, since you are going to be advise (by me) to grab a 4.0l donor truck, you will have the 4.0L tranny of your choice at your disposal. So, whatever you get will fit. A 4.0 tranny bolts in....heck, the sheetmetal is the same, of course....just the engine bits are rearranged between engines.
You can not match a tranny with a different engine than what is attached to it. No 2.3L tranny fits a v-engine, nor will the 3.0 or 4.0 swap around.
If you wanted a 5.0 swap, try rps. An Exploder swap (97-02) would work possibly with slightly more fuss than the 97 or 98 and later Rangers, I believe.
Gas mileage for a 4.0 is not much better than a 5.0L. Freshen up a 4.0L with better cam, valves, port/polish, then you get much better efficiency.
As for cost, no answer will be great because YOU are doing the shopping. It all depends on you and the cost of the donor you choose.
