thank you River for the exact dimensions of the 318 vs. 360....i knew i was missing something...the blocks for the 318 and the 360, tho, are the same, according to my uncle...don't quote me on it, tho...

The best thing you can do is both of you pull a trailer with the weights close as possiable, and see who runs out of gas first.

Proportional to cubic inches the 300 I6 is by far the better engine. He is just picking on a smaller engine. Why I could tell him his 360 sucks because my motorhome has a 460 Ford and it is way more powerful than his puny 360. Where does it end? If he wants to compare with you he should first trade in his truck for a 318, still biger but definitely not better. Or he should find someone with a Ford 351 V8 to pick on.

thats very true. its like saying the 300 is junk because the cummins will out pull it.

just remember: you probably get double the gas mileage. my friend just bought a 5.9 dodge. its real powerful, but at a cost.

Hehehe, reminds me of a buddy of mine with a 360 in his dodge pickup, he wanted to race my 95 pickup with the big 6 and 5spd, i blew its doors off on the take off, but he started to ketch up, good thing we ran out of road or he would made a fool out of me. Ohh well, goes to show big cubes dont mean anything if you dont know how to use 'em.

I like the 5.9 engine just not the tranny's dodge put under it. The 4.9 I6 is problably my favorite gas engine of all time. But i think racing a 318 would be foolish. I own a 318 right now and there is no possible way that an I6 could keep up with me. Its so much faster. But it lacks pulling power and durability.

Just keep asking him..."Hey, that thing got a hemi?"
or
Like two guys in a sauna, say..."My engine's longer than yours!"
Maybe enough of that will shut him up.

Wow jessfactor, a jack--- classmate of mine has a 94 dodge with w/ a 360 and I drive a 86 w/ a 300. He doesn't say to much and it's a good thing he doesn't cause he treats that truck like a baby, he's really cheap and won't go anywhere he doesn't have to, because of the "wear and tear" on his poor pick-up. I bet if I drove his pick-up for a week like I drive my old 300 that dodge would start taking oil and be in the shop w/ the the tranny out and probably blow a head gasket. No other engine out there (stock) can take a beating like a 300 in my book. I run mine above 4000rpms a few times daily just to make noise, it has 225k on it and is pretty much all original except for the timing gears (thanks to 4000rpms) and the POS carb. otherwise I've been tryin to blow this thing up for the past 2 years and she won't give in to that 351W I wanna drop in. I'd feel bad taking out a running engine. Once I get my 351 built (highly unstreet legal, but this is NE) I'll be smokin everything around, and probably be out of money since the engine will cost me about 3000 and it'll get 5mpg, but who cares, it's fast and loud, isn't that all that matters in life? Ha-ha-ha

Well actually the 360 and 273 share the same block. Seems like those cylinder walls would be gettin' a bit thin . But seriously, those Dodge 360 trucks ain't all that bad. They seem to track real good when towed behind my F150 300 ......Van

the I6 that I have in my '83 bronco has 492,800 some miles on it, never been rebuilt. Still runs great, doesnt any burn oil beyond the norm.(ie no blue smoke from the tailpipe, and I dont have to add oil at every fillup)

Sure the 360 is a bit more powerful, but it runs at a higher RPM and has 2 more cylinders. Its gonna run itself to a grinding halt a lot sooner than your I6. If your goign for raw power, higher top end speed and you dont care how long it lasts or the gas mileage, sure go for the 360, But if you want an engine that gives you almost the same towing capacity but that will last you a whole lot longer go for the I6. I mean the only real downside I can find with my I6 is that it tops out about 80 MPH

I dont really have any opinion for or against dodge. And I like VWs better than Fords atm. if only the for fact that my diesel gulf gets about 55 mpg.

My aunt has a 2000 Dodge 1500 w/the mighty 360 in it, and it recently blew w/42,000 miles on it. Shes the type that drives it like a car. My 300 has over 100,000 on it and is used. So you figure it out

well here ya go.... just the other day a dodge with a 360 (2WD) (AUTO) asked me to a pull-off, being the polite gentleman that i am i obliged my 300-6 back by a T18 and 4 low. Revved up the engines a couple times then we let fly. i started to lose, then dumped the clutch, i dragged that guys **** all over the freakin place.

I don't like to put down any american truck. As for lasting I would have to pick the ford 300(4.9) check out forum (miles on your 4.9) lets see a 360 do that. the 360 might be able to pull down the highway faster not better than the 300. but he is going to replace his tranny all the time unless he knows some one that can put a old beefed up 727 trans. in it. your tranny will hold up to annything you can through at it. I think the 300 six is one of the best engines you can get it is not a racer but the has plenty of torque to do anything a v8 from the compition will do. Thats why the F150 has been the best selling truck in over 10 years. If you want to race the dodge will probaly win, but who runs trucks in the 1/4 mile? thats what mustangs are for. Conclusion I would take a 300 over a 360 any day of the week. Just a note im not even a FORD man I own A couple FORD trucks but I am A goodrich(GM) man but I don't think GM makes a engine as good as the 4.9(300) Ford.
