any one enlarge the head bolts on a 302 head to fit 351w bolts?

I read somewhere where someone did this, but cannot remember where.

Can it be done by hand (drill)?

I have a small drill press, just not certain of my ability, any thoughts?

Would there be a drill bit that has a pilot end, I believe I am saying that right, to follow the existing hole, to enlarge to 1/2"?

Any thoughts appreciated

You would indeed need to go to 1/2", but my question will have to be, why are doing this? You should be able to line them up in your press and have at it which would be better than by hand of course, but again, why? Did I ask, why?

I am looking into either getting a set of ported e7's or gt-40p and they both came off a 302, so the head bolts need to be larger to accomodate the 351w bolts. later

Hey JW,
I'd try to use a drill press for that job. Hopefully you have enough table adjustment in yours to accomadate the cylinder head with the drill bit. The existing hole in the head will guide you through it, so no need for a pilot drill bit.

thanks. Yeah I figured the existing hole would guide me, I could step the bolts up slowly, size wise I guess.

Actually what I was dong with this thread was fishing for an answer on the actual head bolt hole size required for the 351w bolts. I read somewhere that you don't need a 1/2" hole or in reality its not 1/2", couldn't remember which it was, but I do remember that someone wrote it. I will find out when I take the heads off, I was trying to get the heads done before I take the existing ones off and stick the new ones on, save some down time. Ah, no big deal I don't guess, believe it or not I have 3 people with gt-40p heads that I am trying to deal with in order to get the best deal. I have mentioned this to each, but I think they believe I am only saying that for bargaining strategy. later

JWT,

So does this mean you're gonna P & P the GT-40 heads when you get them or did you wimp out?

Later,

Well, I do plan on grinding the port smooth on the exhaust and to 80 grit on the intake, and smoothing the short turn radius, if needed.

I couldn't justify putting any effort into the e5/e7, when I can pick up a set of gt-40p that flow similar to ported e7, for about the same money. I couldn't say what I am gonna do, at this point

I have a ported/ three angle valve job/ milled pair of e7's, a magnafluxed set of gt-40p for little over a $100, a set of three angle valve job/ ported gt-40p, and another set of clean gt-40p I am looking at all at once, trying to start with the ones I prefer first, if I can't come to an agreement then I will move to the next. I was within $25 with one fella, he didn't move my way, and I didn't plan on moving his, they were a nice set too. Well, except for the 100 dollar set the others are all the same price shipped to my door, just a matter of making one of them a final buy, as I have my preferences, but getting a quick response isn't always easy. Slow process for sure, don't worry if I end up with the none ported heads, I do plan on putting a grinding stone to them, may do it anyway just to polish the surface. Have you received your heads back from the machine shop yet?

your turning down a pair of gt40-p's over a skimpy $25? Must be nice, I wish I could find a pair for $100-$200.
I did a search on stangnet for 351w head bolt size and I came up with a thread about swapping in a 351w into a fox body mustang. Inside the thread I found this quote.

I had TEA do mine while the heads were already getting CNC ported and machined.

Now you could listen to this guy hes got a lot of posts and a nice mustang....but to be on the safe side you could get the 1/2" bit and hold the chuck end of the bit to the threaded part of the head bolt and eyeball em for some reassurance.

Pud

Well I won't tell you which ones I am currently looking at, buy I will say if your looking for a set of take off heads, gt-40p's, I know a fella that has sold a few sets to others on another board, he in fact has a pair of take offs, for $150. If you want the phone number I will be more than happy to give it to you, he said it was his last set, he has another set brand new for $400. If it weren't for the few I came across the other day I probably would have them in my possession now. Let me know

I also found out that the 302 has a 7/16" hole and the 351 1/2", so knocking out a 16 th of an inch shouldn't be a big deal, I thought there was a wider margin, so thats good news. later

JW-
I am in Canada. Im not actually looking for a pair of gt40s anymore, I got a pair of e7s for free. Im building a stock HO engine for my stang to run around with untill I get all the parts for a big block swap. Thanks anyways. On stangnet there are a couple of guys running gt40s on their windsors making some real nice #s. Good luck
