I am the proud owner of a 99 Super w/the 5.4...I bought it w/112,000 on it, it didn't knock. It now now has 130,000 on it and knocks like crazy w/ it's cold. I don't beat it at all, in fact 90% is highway mileage. Could it just be lifters?? I have a powertrain warranty (Not Ford) for another 3,000mi. Is there any one out there that has experienced this??? Is there any way I could have it meet it's maker without the warranty co. knowing?? It must breakdown completely though, no wear and tear claims allowed. Thanks ahead of time!!!!
Just for the sake of the simple stuff what oil filter are you using? Is it a tapping or a deep knocking? There's really no way of killing it without anybody knowing how it happened.
I was using a Mobil 1 filter and then switched to motorcraft because I heard that Ford made a strong recommendation to use theirs otherwise there was a good chance you would hear noise. Secondly, it sounds like a little of both I will really listen close and reply back. Thanks again for your time!!!!!
Does it stop knocking after the motor warms up? Does it knock when you step on it and then stops when you are up to speed? I would not rule out an exhaust leak either...

Yes...there are only three licensed drivers in the household
What weight of oil are you using, and how often have you changed the oil and filter? Also if it is only a tapping type sound, you might want to try running a quart of marvels mystery oil through it. It worked on my chevy, it cleans the motor internally, gets all of the garbage out. Might want to change the oil within a thousand miles of adding MMO, i usually replace a quart of oil with a quart of MMO when i change the oil, and then the first time i changed it about a thousand miles later and you would not imagine what came out of an engine with only 40k on it. I always change the oil every 3000 miles along with the filter, and use wix filters and mobil drive clean oil.

Thanks again guys!!! I change the oil about every 2500mi. I appreciate all of the suggestions and will try each of them and let you guys know what happens.
I changed the oil today adding the Lucas oil stabilizer...Amazing stuff!!!! The knock was getting a little too loud for my liking. I wanted to see if it would help. Well needless to say you can't hear the knock unless you put your head above the tire right next to the inner fender. Even when you do, the knock is extremely faint. Thanks for the advice now I might take it and try trading it in somewhere!!!
