300 I-6 to 302HO

OK, I have a question, I have an 88 F-250 with the 300 I-6 and the C6, I also own an 87 Mustang GT and am planning on swapping on Explorer Heads, Intake an Throttle body + an E-CAM for some more power out of it. Well, I do very little if ANY towing with my truck, has 4.11's in the rear-end though, because it used to belong to my grandfather who towed boats all the time with it. I'm considering putting my old HO heads, Intake and Cam from my Mustang on the Explorer 302 block, in essence, making a 302HO out of it except the Explorer block has Flat-Top pneumatic Pistons, so no NOS, S/C or Turbo, but that's really irrelevant. How much work is it to swap a 302HO into my truck and do I need to change the bell housing or anything or does it bolt right up to where the 300 I-6 is? Any suggestions, comments would be greatly appreciated.

Also, on a completely different note, what size bolts/plugs go where the fresh-air pipe goes into the head? mine are leaking like a bugger at the moment and makes using the heater a fumy experience, and of course, its ticking a lot too.

I think you mean hyperautenic (sp) pistone

HO motor used forged piston up through 92, but in 93 it switched to the hyper pistons also, and they are flatop pistons as well.

Bellhousings are interchangable between the 4.9L six and the 302, although I think the motor mount locations on the frame are different and will need to be changed.

Awesome! Yeah, that's the word I was looking for, hyperneutenic or whatever.

Thanks for the info.

instead of puting the money into a 302, why don;t you sup up the six, or a truck, the 6 will out pull a 302 anyday. If you are looking for like a rodrod truck, the 302 is a better choice. As for the conversion, mounts will have to change, as for bellhousings, the 351/302/300 had the same. I do not know the weight difference between a 6 and a 302, but you might have to get heavier front springs. Also i am pretty sure there are difference sensor hookups and such, plus you will need a 302 PCM mod which will work with a c-6. Wiring harness might have to be changed out for one for a 302.

I'm getting the entire setup out of an Explorer, I'm not "putting any money out" for this motor, as I'm buying it for the heads and intake anyways, so I'm just going to have it kicking around. The HO will smoke my I-6 in terms of HP, not low-end, no, but HP, definitely, and since I don't tow with it, I think its probably a better choice. Converting the Mustang to Mass-Air as well, so will have Mustang Computer for the truck too.

For the work needed, you will wonder why you did not go the 351 route.

ESPECIALLY in an F250!

HO version or not, the small v8 is a step BACK compared to the 300!

It has like 50HP on the I-6, how is that a step back, even if it is further up the rev range?

Its really not that much work either, I'm not going to try and do it in one day or anything, I will do the Mustang first, heads, intake and Cam on it, then put together the other motor out of the old Mustang parts and when I have some more time, start on that and work on it in my spare time while I'm driving the Mustang. Should be fun actually I'm not going to throw out the I-6 or anything, might build it up too and use it later, but for now the 302HO is some quick drop-in power that is easy to get parts for.
