9" Ford rearend

I just obtained a Ford 9" rearend with disk brakes from a donor car. I would like to install it in my 56 F100 but like it is for a lot of people, money is always an issue.

The sell of the rearend could help finance other restoration issues. The question I have, what is rearend worth if I sold it? Does anyone have a clue?

The salvage yards around here sells them at $200-$300, I've seen some from explorers for over $500 asking price I quess it may depend on what year.

I'v seen a lot of posts mentioning these 9" rearends. What are they typically found in?I see that some come out of cars.Would an early 80's lincoln town car have anything like that in it?Just curious,as I have 4 of them.thanks.

Thanks.I might have stumbled across that a little while ago.My cars are buried in the snow so I can't really identify the housings for a few weeks.I saw Lincolns mentioned, but they seemed to be in years previous to mine.I'v never had a problem with a rearend,so i wouldn't know a whole lot about the sizes or specs. The closest I got was changing a wheel seal.lol.They do seem quite popular. Thanks again for the link.

Mine came from a 88 Lincoln. From what I understand, the disk brakes were special order.

Thanks.I just thought where they were a big car that they might have a rear housing that might be suitable for a truck application.Everything else seems to be heavyduty.I don't really need one at the moment, but they may come in handy sometime.I bought 2 of them for $100 and 1 was given to me through a mechanics lein.I'm looking for a motor for my 65,so I might be able to do some yankee swapping with them.I tend to get better deals through swaps. Thanks again.

Aekisu,

If that rear end came from an 88 Lincoln, I would think that its an 8.8. the 85 Mark7 had a 7.5 with discs but from there they been 8.8's. Are you sure its an 8.8. Just wondering.

Why I'm asking the questions on the Lincolns is that after I get my truck running.I'm thinking that it may be low sped.I don't plan on doing any pulling or carrying heavy loads with it,so changing the rearend may be something I will be looking at doing in the future.Do the Lincolns have a heavyduty enough rearend for my truck if they were 8.8's?

I suspect that the truck rear-ends are heavier duty than those that came in the Lincolns. However, I still plan to use the 8.8 out of my Mustang in my 55. I do plan on putting premium axles and bearings in it as I want the 5 bolt axles and a 3.73 gear set. the Mustang crowd is putting lots of HP through these things at the drags.

I guess the next thing i will have to consider is the gear ratio in the Lincolns.I'm just running some different ideas around in my head right now. This is the first restoration for me so I'm kinda learning as I go.The more questions I ask the more i realize i don't have a clue about a lot of these things.thanks.

John,

your rear end ratio will be somewhat dependent on your choice of transmission and whether or not it has an overdrive and your tire size will influence as well. I would ideally like to run around 2000 rpm in the final gear at aroud 65 mph. The .68 5th gear in my T5 and the 235/70/15 rear tires will need about a 3.73 to get there. With a staight 1 to 1 final gear as is the case with the old 3 speeds or C4,C6, this would drop the rear ratio to about 2.5:1. A 2.73:1 which is a very common rear ratio with T5 Mustangs around 88-92 might be more appropriate. There are all sorts of ratios available for the 8.8s. Any Mustang mag has lots of ads for these.

Thanks.I'll have to wait till the snow goes to check it out I guess.Changing rearends will proabably be on of the final things I do to my truck once I get everything else fixed.I have a lot of Ford parts but it does't seem to be the right ones.I have a 302 H.O. motor ,but I can't use it in my other truck.I have 3 trannys, all auto. and my trucks are std.I have some nice rims and tires,all15 in.My trucks are 16 and 17 in.Can't win for loosing.lol.Thanks for the imfo.on the rearends.Seems the ones I have my be useless as far as my truck goes.Oh well.
