Need a veterinarians assistance..got a ??
I have a little house dog, jack russell, and he is constantly scratching at himself, yeah I know all dogs do that, but more so than usual. He has these red spots appear and his skin is red in areas at times, not all the time. The local vet gave us some medicine, prednisone 5mg, for the dog and well, he still scratches all the time and claws at his face, would be how I would put it. Obviously the pills don't work and quite frankly the vet says that is all he can do. We did buy some kind of sulfodene for the hot spots and redness, but that stuff has a bad odor and doesn't seem to work too well either. All the pills do is make the dog wanna urinate all the time, so something has to give. We even changed the detergent we use thinking it was an allergic reaction, and we also changed his foot and treats, made no difference. First house pet, so I am clueless, any thoughts appreciated.

Prednisone is an oral steroid that can be given to animals and humans. I helps control skin rash and breakouts. It also helps calm the nerves that make you itch.
If your dog isn't responding to it, maybe a 2nd opinion or a flea bath using a conditioning shampoo is in order.
If you want to know what the long term of prednisone is on a human, just look at what Jerry Lewis looks like now after a few years of taking it for his afflictions.

hope this helps.
we went through hell with buddy ( lab shepard )
and his skin problems he looked like he had mange it was awful!
the prednisone will make his heart burst if you keep him on them.
give your dog benadryl 25mg tablet, wrap it in cream cheese he'll never find it. that at least will give him some relief.
next put bag balm on his spots he can ingest this without killing him, might loosen him up a bit but not much.
we gave buddy 3 benadryl about 2-3 times a day in the beginning and have kept him on it ( only 1 pill ) at night.
i wouldn't give your dog that much but i would give him one if no relief in 1 hour give him 1 more.
you'd be surprised how much more the dogs can take then humans.
there is also a really good book out called " the dog owners home veterinarian hand book"
hope this helps

Appreciate all the info, I will check and see if I can find that book.
If I am not mistaken my wife called another vet and they said the same thing, as far as medication.
The dog doesn't have fleas, we put some kinda crap on him that lasts for a month. Its been a year and have not seen the first tick, I live in the country, so I check/ know to look for it, and the dog is always indoors, except for an hour or so a day, even then hes in short grass, well short to me, not him, haha.
His bowl is ceramic, so I can rule that out as well.
Again all the responses were good ones, thanks

Just because you have short grass doesn't mean he isn't getting into something like poison ivy or poison oak. Also the oils from these can stick around for a year.. Does he have any particular spots in the yard where he likes to roll around in the grass. If so check that area closely.
I know what poison oak can do. I was on prednisone for almost a month because of it. And not small doses either.
That stuff is nasty.

Well the pup has been going through the hot spots from the time we got him, which put him at 7 weeks and he is over a year now, so the weather hasn't really changed the level of aggrevation. Thanks though, that was a good point.
No there isn't any poison ivy in the yard or anywhere near the area, I would now it myself, I can catch it if I look at it. No paritcular area he likes to roll around in the yard, he doesn't roll around in the yard much at all. First time he saw snow he rolled around in it, but that doesn't count, haha. Thanks that was also a good suggestion

What I always did with my Rotty (highly prone to bad skin itches and hotspots) when I went in the shower - SHE CAME TOO!!!!
I washed myself and my baby every day. Flea stuff - all of it. Good enough for me, good enough for her. My Rotty deserved to be treated like I was treated, and if I was clean, so was she.
She came to love it, and when shower time came - she came and got me!
The shampoos got confusing - fleadip versus human stuff...
Oh well.
My puppies are my kids.
BLAST THE YARD!
That's where the bugs are. KILL them.

i was just talking to a friend with a newfoundland and she reminded me that her dog had almost died from frontline plus, was on anti-biotics for 1 year.
they use betagen topical spray, ( from the vet ) as soon as she would itch they would spray her.
etiderm shampoo ( at 1-800- pet meds) they sware by this stuff.
he/she may just have allergys try the benadryl ( regular ) generic is good too.
