Single VS Dual Exhaust?

I have a stock 2000 v6 auto with about 32K miles on her. I first plan on putting a Mac intake or an airforce one intake into her in a couple of weeks. Next, and probably the only other engine mod I will do is put on a gibson or flowmaster cat back system. My question is what is the difference in the single or dual out variations? Is this strictly for looks or does it affect the performance at all? If it is related to performance, which would be better for the 4.2 with only a intake on her? Please help!

Also, which has a nice growl to them, gibson or flowmasters? Any particular model, diameter of pipe, etc? Thanks

bigger is not awalys better when it comes to exhaust. the exhuast system makes a vacum pluse which helps draw the exhaust out of the cylinder. what some people call back pressure. so going to big can kill this pluse and your cylinder will fill with less intake charge. so i would go no bigger than 2.5 on dual and 3 inch on single. belive it or not thats how it works!

Glad to see some one else that recognizes this fact!!!

Even 2.5 dual and 3" single mite me a bit much for our trucks. Depending on what you are doing with it. the more you open it up (to a piont) the more mid to hi power you get. At the expense of low end torque. And vise versa.

As far as growl, it depends also. Flowmaster makes several different series of mufflers for that. A 40 series is going to give an aggressive sound while say a 70 series will be more mild.

Their is no black and white when it comes to engine building. Thats what makes it so fun. Its an art! its always going to come down to what YOU want to do/try.

Good luck and have fun.

Both Gibson and Flowmaster have a nice exhaust. If I saved some money I'd buy a SISO Gibson Catback system exited out the side before the front tire. I love my 40 series flowmaster, but it's just kinda boring ya know. It has no "looks" I guess. Plus, I think the Gibson will give me more power.

Thanks for the info guys. Another thing I was concerned about was if I needed to recalibrate or reprogram the truck after each of the mods?

1. If I install the Air Force One or Mac Intake, will I need to reprogram anything? I read somewhere on this site that the guy had to disconnect and reconnect the battery. What does that do? Is it needed?

2. After I install the cat back exhaust with either the single or dual exhaust, along with having installed the intake, will I then have to recalibrate or reprogam anything?

No, all you need to do is disconnect the battery when installing the Intake and reconnect it when your done.

I think thats to reset so the comp knows the maf and air temp sensors are back in, I believe.... NO programming is needed until you do forced induciton, headers, or NOS.
