I need to know what kind/type of propane tank I need for a propane kit for my truck. I'm assuming that a regular barbecue grill tank ISN'T what I want. Can I use a horizontal/vertical tank - like what is used on forklifts?? Or do I have do get some special tank from the company that makes the Propane Injection kit??
I'm looking to mount it somewhere under the truck and I picture one of those forklift tanks tucking nicely between the body and the frame? ANY input would really help!! Thanks guys!

 

Quad can give you a really good run down on what you need. I think you'll also have to re program that chip you ordered so it will work with propane.

 

It depends on which propane system you install. If you go with a vapor system like the Powershot2000, you'd want a vapor tank. A BBQ tank is a vapor tank, but doesn't supply enough vapor to feed the system, but you could use two in tandem. I've got a 9.9 gallon Manchester tank mounted under the bed of my truck, and can go 2000-3000 miles between fill ups. Click here for pics of my setup.
If you go with a liquid system, like the Bully Dog, you'd need a different tank, but I don't have a lot of experience with that system.

Thanks for the info - it's a vapor system that I'm asking about - the Powershot2000. Does anyone know what the forklift tanks are? Vapor tanks or no? The reason I'm asking is 'cause I have easy access to some used ones in good condition for a decent price.

 

Cat man, You might want to check the local wrecking yards for a tank off of a motor home. They are horizonal. vapor tanks and have a level gauge installed on them. Would probably have suffcient flow capability since it is designed to provide flow to the stove, oven and heating system at the same time. Just a thought...

 

Well I got one answer - forklift tanks are liquid-draw tanks, NOT vapor tanks - so there goes that idea down the crapper. Now I'm wondering about using the 2 BBQ tanks hooked together - I know I'll have to get a custom part made up but I've already got about 10 regular sized BBQ tanks sitting around so I wouldn't have to spend the money for a tank.

 

If they're OPD tanks, you'd be fine with two of them. My buddy also has a PS2000 and runs that setup. He's got a hose that splits, and connects to both tanks simultaneously. His works great, and he can take the tanks out of the bed of his truck and fill them. My tanks is permanently mounted under the truck, and I just have it filled like a motorhome.

 

maksure your tanks have the DOT approval too, i got a nailed for not having it on my work van, i got a tank off a wrecked motor home, and im running the bullydog system, soon to have it on the pickup truck. thoose hose splits they will have at any rv store also if its over #30 tank the OPD is exempt
