Question Tonneau cover hell

I have been looking high and low for a tonneau cover like I had on my 2000 Lariat (it was a Factory Ford Cover) for my new 04 Lariat.

The new Ford cover looks to be an Extang with sealed strips on the side. It was saggy with no adjustments to tighten the cover and it could be opened with the tailgate up (hence no security!), unlike the old one. And it was a chessy shiny black vinyl that looked very cheap.

Does anyone know who makes the old factory offical tonneaus for Ford? They had a nice flush flat edge look and could not be removed without opening the tailgate first, for security. And they were a grey flat sheen vinyl that looked good. I have searched the web high and low and can find nothing like them anywhere.

It seems every snapless cover I can find allows you to pull off the cover while the tailgate is still up, hence no security.

Thanks for any help

BreezyRacer...have you looked at the Extang RT roll-up? It says it is secured when tailgate is up. Plus, it has a compensation mechanism to adjust for hot/cold temps to keep the tarp tight. When you roll it up, the support bows roll with it.

This is what I'm looking at for my '04 FX4 flareside:

From this link, go to their homepage and select the RT icon.

Let me know what you think! -Don

Thanks guys! None of that is what I'm exactly looking for though the RT comes close. I'm not sure about the roll up spreaders and especially the velco seal but it is an option should I not find what I want.

I'm really yanked that Ford chose to offer such a crappy tonneau cover. Maybe they will re think it.

Thanks for the welcome too. I've been lurking for a while. I canot beleive how good these new F-150s are!

Have you looked at Access and Peragon, that's my final two choices.

I like the Retrax, but I don't need that much money into a cover.

What you are describing sounds a lot like the Access brand cover. I don't think they made the Ford one, but I have quite a few happy neighbors with the Access on and haven't had any sagging problems. The tonneua hasn't sagged anyway, maybe the neighbors...

I am choosing the LT Extreme flat cover. It is paint matched and only weighs 58 lbs. http://www.ltsportcover.com/tonneau-...0-super-xf.htm

That Extreme flat cover sure looks sharp, but it does't look like it would roll up well ;-)

I need something soft that will stay with the truck when I need to handle tall items.

Hey, those LT covers are made in North Dakota! My homestate. I didn't realize that. The Access brand ones are made in Jamestown, ND as well. Hmm, ND is becoming a truck accessory state! Cool...

I went with a Fold-a-Cover. It secures with locks on both ends and folds up in four sections. Works great so far. It’s a rigid cover though.

In the end there were 3 designs that I found ..
Extang RT, the Access Roll up cover, and the Tonneau Master roll cover.

I like the Tonneau Master one best because it places the velcro on a curved rail surface so it's more easily tensoned and leak resistant, and the rails are painted balck instead of natural aluminum. I think it's the one for me ..

The Access one is also pretty nice though, but a bit more costly
