steering colum noise 79f2504x4manual

I am hearing an annoying creeking, shuddering, sound from my steering colum when I encounter bumps(constantly). I imagine the bushings or bearings are worn. Seems to be getting worse. Has anyone out there rebuilt one? Where can I get replacement bushings or bearings. I hate to take it apart and not have parts on hand, it is my only form of transportation at this time. Could I possibly get by with dissassembly and some good lubricant. Any input greatly appreciated.

I thought they were supposed to do that. both of mine have done that for as long as I can remember. It's annoying, but I like to think that it adds character I used to wonder why the steering wheel bounced when I went around left hand turns only to find out that my shock had rusted through in the back and the entire wheel was boucing off the ground. Most of the noise from my steering actually comes from the plasic steering shaft cover rubbing against the steering wheel. It certainly warrants looking into, but don't dismiss the idea that it might be something as simple as a strategic shot of WD40. Does your steering have any abnormal play? Also make sure the screws are tight where the cover meets the dashboard and take the ashtray out just to be sure. There is a lot of metal to resonate on that dash, and it can make it difficult to pinpoint a sounds location. good luck

As soon as summer hits and its above 80 degrees, my 79 steering column squeaks like a tortured guinnea pig

It's done it for as long as I've onwed the truck. It goes away as soon as the temp falls.
