93 7.3 Idi...

I have the opportunity to purchase a 1993 F350 with a 7.3 IDI w/ ~154k on the vehicle.

My question is, other than the coolant, what should I know about these motors in terms of 'problems' that were apparent on more than just a few?

Are/were all the 1993 motors turbo (being pre-PSD), or were there truely NA motors during this model year on the F350 series?

Any help would kindly be appriciated...as I am more used to the 6.5TD motors, as well as the 5.9 Cummins...but still new enough to the game to be overly green on the Diesel motors.

Thanks in advance,

Scott Kregar

I believe it will depend on the build date of the truck if the 93 is factory turbo. If your engine has a turbo on it - it could be aftermarket system. I am not familiar with all the systems. Advanced Turbo Systems supplied an aftermarket system for the Ford trucks. Ford did take the ATS turbo system and added it to the factory engine with some internal modifications. The ATS system will say "ATS Turbo" on the air cleaner and if it is factory it will say "Ford Turbo" on the air cleaner. Hope this helps.

Both NA and turbo 7.3 IDI engines were offered in 93. Which one it had depended on how it was ordered, not the build date.

The cooland addatives were the main major problem if not used.

Oil changes as well as proper servicing of the filters made this a long lasting engine.
