i changed the intake and timing chain gakets,i don't know if iwas starting to have this and just found, but the heat gauge runs in the normal position,it has cool air from yhe vents with the heat, drive it down the road, heat works good, but the bottom radiator hose is cold, the other hoses are hot,i changed the thermostat when i changed the gaskets,so i put the old one back in,same problem,i drove it about 60 mile,it didn't overheat or anything,i made sure intake gaskets were on the right sides and forward as shown. thanks
So what's your question exactly? Can you restate? Your paragraph is kind of confusing. your saying that your truck doesn't overheat, is blowing hot air through the vent when you turn your heat on, but your hoses are cold? This sounds like a good thing.
If your in sub 10 temperatures, I'd imagine that your bottom radiator hose would probably run cool, while the other hoses under your hood would run hot.
This make perfect sense to me. Your truck is perfect!!
i changed the leaking gaskets on the intake and manifold. At a idle the vent air is cool, the motor is at normal temp, then i drive it down the road, vent air becomes hot, temp.still in normal position, with hot air coming from vents,i can get out and check the hoses, heater core and top hoses are hot,but the bottom hose is cold, the temp remains in the normal position ,it hasn't overheated,i changed the thermostat and it didn't help, same result.
i live in cincinnati oh.,i drove 50 miles to work last night, the right side of the radiator was warm the left side was cold,i changed the timing chain cover gasket and manifold gaskets, they were leaking, could someone have put stop leak in it to stop the water leaks, and the radiator is plugged up.I think it is bypassing the water through the heater hoses,it hasn't overheated and so far the heater has worked ok now.
When was the last time you've had it flushed and filled??
Does the fluid look rusty?
Perhaps take it to Jiffy Lube and have them flush and fill it for 50 bucks.
Otherwise, I cannot imagine why half the radiator is COLD. Heck, my whole engine compartment is hot, even things that don't have hot fluid running through them, like my window washing fluid. I can't understand how the heat from your engine compartment doesn't heat up your radiator. But then it IS freezing up there. You may be good for now, as far as overheating, because of the cold. However you may develope a problem in the summertime. You can probably pick up a used or even new radiator for cheap. But I would have it flushed and filled first anyway.
I agree with Busa on everything except the Jiffy Lube part! I would not let them morons change the water in my snakes cages, let alone do a radiator flush!

The anticipation of death is worse then death itself!
Just a suggestion/Guess. If the heat is controlled by a vacuum valve, and you are losing vacuum at an idle wouldn't that allow the heat valve to close? Also, could be a plugged heater core. I agree with a cooling system flush with so many miles. I recommend going to a pro. Heard lots of horrors about the J-team. Too much pressure will blow an old heater core in a hurry.
These symptoms are normal for a 4.2 that is about to fail catastrophically. Heater core, radiator, and leaking problems all precede hydrostatic lock in these engines, resulting in eventual complete and premature failure.
my 97 4.2 is the complete oposite.. when idleing its hot air.. then when i drive its goes to cold air... and I am in the process of putting it back together after new gaskets front seal and water pump... i figured it was because it was low in coolent.
