Useable and safe air/fuel ratios fall into a narrow range.
Sure, we could program for better mileage, but it would accelerate like slug, require special plugs and would generally run like crap. If they could get better mileage with 87 octane without sacrificing performance, they would have done it with the stock tune.
If you want better mileage and more power from the same volume of fuel without making physical changes to the vehicle, it has to be programmed for premium fuel. You can't get something for nothing.
I get the same question often, and unfortunately its just wishful thinking!
