Houston Person,
My Trailer is a single axle and the boat is well balanced on the trailer with a definite C G bias to the rear. My Skid steer could of course be moved to adjust C G over the double axle trailer but I still liked to load the tongue and hitch fairly heavy. I'm sure it was at least 400 lb.
Your trailer sounds like it should balance better.

I towed a couple of snowmobiles this weekend and the truck handled them like a dream. You could feel that you were towing something but I never got the feeling that the tailer was going to control the truck...the ride was much better than my buddy's Toyota SUV.

I towed a 18 foot flat bed bumper with a 5500# tractor with my class IV from Brackettville to Houston and had no problems, the rear squated some but nothing like my 98 did. I love the new rear leafs they really handle the weight..

My Trailer Boat Magazine towing guide say to expect a typical trailer tongue weight to be about 10% of the trailer weight. For boats they say to expect 5%.

If your's weighs 6,000 lbs this would put the tongue weight at around 300. The best thing to do any time you're concerned about the weight of your rig is to load it as normal and take it to a scale.

My boat is about 3500 lbs dry and I don't have a care in the world when I think about towing with this truck. (2004 Lariat SuperCrew 4x4). 30 sheets of drywall didn't phase it in the least (1600+ lbs)

BlueMonday and kittyhawk,

Thanks for the input. That is good news. Because of the large spacing on all four of the trailer wheels (front axle and back axle are a good distance apart), I think the tounge load should be small for this set up. Certainly less then 500lbs. If I feel it is too unwildly or unblanced, then of course I will take it to a scale for sure. I think the large hitch company close by has a complete scale system for testing these things out too.

I am finally getting some good solid feedback from guys with the new F150 towing the bigger loads and it is very encouraging.

Thanks

I tow a 6000 lbs 29' boat with twin bigblocks on a 1500lbs trailer with no problem with my new F150. boats with their engines in the rear have minimal toungue weight compared to the total weight (unlke campers).

I also confirmed when ordering my truck that the towing package comes with a class IV hitch.

you will have zero problems with that boat. that is what your truck is made for!!!

I pull the boat at 75 mph on the highway
even though they say you can tow in overdrive. i run in drive
eliminating the hunting between gears.

Rambunctious - Thats cool!

Yeah my boat is a V drive with the engine in the back. Some have now told me the tounge load could be as low as 300 lbs. I think the F150 will be a perfect match for the boat, and I can still get the truck in the garage!

All,
I am one of the guys who opted for the smaller 4.9v8. Anyone have any towing experiences with this one?
I bought the SuperCrew XLT with a towing package.
Thanks,
Chris

cast....

I think you mean the 4.6 modular engine. but my father has a 1998 with 4.6 and pulls his 4500 John Deer tractor on a car hauler. and it probably weighs close to my boat.
he did put air shocks on because of tongue weight but that has nothing to do with the enigne.

your truck will pull up to 5000 and probably more with no problem. especially if you have the 3.73 ratio.
