When does tranny shift?

Really hit the gas for the first time since buying my truck. Pulled into traffic when I probably should not have. Anyway, I think I was already in second (auto) when I accelerated and climbed to 3500 RPMs in no time flat. At that point I eased off the gas because tranny had still not shifted to third. Was it coming? Did I just lose my nerve? I would appreciate any insight into this. Thanks

No normal mode, and I was on level ground. For what ever it's worth it's a crew cab long bed with 4 wheel drive.

On the floor mine shifts around 3600 except 3-4 which hits the rev limiter around 3900. In tow - haul mode it's more consistant. This engine revs higher than most diesels.
