preformance for a 94 idi

My dad has a 94 idi turbo diesel and was wondering what he could do to get more power. He already has a k&n filter and 3" straight pipe exhaust. Any Ideas? How does turning up the injector pump help the idi turbo's? Can anybody give me instructions on turning up the pump and how much tweekin is ok. Any input is apreciated.

Was the 3" pipe run all the way to the turbo?
On the stock turbo setup the turbo outlet pipe was a major restriction.
Does the truck smoke black any at all when pulling a grade while you have your foot in it?
I would want to install a pyrometer before turning up the pump. When you turn up the pump you are giving the engine more fuel. More fuel means more heat. You can melt things in your motor like the turbo and pistons.
Once the truck is getting enough fuel to start smoking black smoke you are about as far as you can go, any more is just wasting fuel because the black smoke is incomplete combustion of the fuel.
Depending where you are at, black smoke may not be a good thing, as far as the air police are concerned it may be a bad thing.
