460 Efi Camshaft Upgrade

Has anyone installed a hot cam in an EFI 460 with stock air density system? Did you need a chip? If so what brand? Has anyone tried the Interactive systems Technologies MAF conversion? Comp Cams offers a cam specificaly for the stock air density EFI. I am considering this cam although I would like the largest cam that will fit. Will a pre "72 timing set work with the EFI engine. I've been told the blocks are all the same. The truck is a 96. The truck has tri-y headers now and is my show truck / cruizer. I,m looking to get as much power as possible without removing the heads, the truck has very low miles. Any suggestions for more HP would be greatly appricated.

You can run a mild towing/RV style cam without chiping and your truck will run O.K.
I currently run a towing cam with no problems on my 1989 460 EFI.

But to maximise your HP or run a more aggressive style cam then you should chip it. Of course you can purchase a chip right here on this site.

I had the same question about fitting a pre-72 timing set into my 96 460. Can anyone answer that? I don't think this maintenance is too far in the future for my high milage daily driver. Don't mean to steal your thread, just trying to draw the follow-up.

as for the pre 72 timing set.... don't waste your money, the 88-up 460s (EFI) all have a straight up timing chain......

Deen,

Just curious - What brand of cam did you install, and how about a seat of the pants evaluation? This is something I'm really interested in, but previously figured my '94 EFI (speed-density)system limited me from doing. . .

Thanks!

I just put the comp for EFI in mine. It is an XE-262 on a 114 lobe sep. Idles very nice, runs good. And I have a straight up timing set, too. From a 60-something 429. No chip, either. I have headers and duals, too. Sounds like about the same truck. Cheers.

doctorq,

My cam is a Competition Cams special grind. I asked them to maximise my towing ability since that is my main reason for owning the truck. Duration at .050 is 206 in. 211 ex. lift is .499 in and .510 ex.

The power range is relatively low...from off-idle to 4,000 RPM. It allows me to pull 9,000 lbs. of trailer up fairly steep grades without having to down-shift into a lower gear (C-6 automatic). I can maintain between 50-55 MPH up the steep grades and can easily exceed the speed limits on mild grades.

Your typical RV grind will be a little more aggressive and you'll lose a little torque on the bottom end but pick up in the mid-range and top end. If I had to do it all over again I probably would go for an off the shelf RV grind. The cam that borin&strokin is running (XE-262) sounds about perfect.

Borin & Strokin, i have been looking at the cam you have, you didn't say how it performs. Can you elaborate a little in that direction? Thanks.

With the other stuff, it runs like a scalded dog. Well, ok it is a HEAVY truck, so it won't break any land speed records, but it is a nice upgrade over stock. I haven't really worked it with a load yet, but I like it so far very much. I also have not checked mileage with it, should be within the next week or so. Cheers

Deen & others,

Where do I go on this site to talk to someone about buying a custom chip? I will most likely go with an aggressive RV type cam. What type of pistons are used in the EFI 460s. Will there be sufficient piston to valve clearance? How about lifter, pushrod, & rocker upgrades. Of course new lifters, did you guys use ford lifters & rods or aftermarket. Are all of the 460 blocks the same?

Thanks to all for your input, It is very helpful.

With my cam, I went with -per comp reccomendations -the stock valvetrain. Pushrods, springs, retainers.... The cam runs about .5" lift and I have no problems. I went with lifters from Napa, the box was marked federal mogul, but they are made by another company. The same stock replacement lifters you get from anyone, and the same price everywhere.

96f350rcsrw460zf,

Go back to the list of Forums and click on "Computer Chips and Tuners". Then post your question there on what chip to purchase. Ken (our Webmaster) should respond and tell you what you need to do. To order your chip you'll already need to know what modifications you are going to make (like adding headers, or what cam you'll be running, etc)

Your stock pistons are cast & dished and should have sufficient clearance for up to .500 lift. To be safe I would buy the cam, lifters and springs as a package. If you stay below .500-.520 lift you shouldn't have to change your push-rods or rockers. The only way you'll know for sure if you have clearance for everything is to check clearances during assembly, most kits come with directions explaining how to do this.

Checking the comp web site the only cam I find for the EFI 460 is there "Computer Controlled XE256H-14". Is this the cam you used or was yours a special order?
What's the specs for the EFI stockcamshafts?
Thanx Kirk
