Gear Pop-0ut

I have a '78 E-250, which I bought new. It has the 300 6-cyl., and a manual 3-speed transmission with shift on the column. It has 71,000 miles on it.

I've had first gear pop-out [only when decelerating or going down a hill] for some time and have lived with it.

I now have second gear pop-out which occurs at the time the shift is made and the accelerator is pressed - in other words, when I'm ready to go in second.

I have checked and re-set the shift linkage countless times using the 3/16" pin for alignment. I have also tried many out-of-alignment settings to see if I might see a change. No luck. All bolts to engine, clutch housing and trans are tight.

I know this van is an unusual option package but they are out there. Does anyone have a clue as to what is causing this and/or have a possible fix - short of rebuilding the trans.

Thanks, hanajack

I had an 84 with the 4 sp. manual (3+OD), had same problem. It was worn shift forks. Replaced them and it was fine.
