heater core

i was just lookin(still admiring my new truck!) at my glove box and i pulled it down to see behind it. anyhow i noticed this boxy area with screws around it and i was wondering if anybody knows if it is how to get access to the heater core? i also seen this plunger and figured that it was part of what changes the blower mode. so i reached up and turned the **** and it moved. no big deal, right, but the key was off!? i was just wonderin why that happened. what causes this part to operate? thanks.

Yes that is the heater core.

The plunger controls the air flow to either the panel or the floor by moving a door.

You just broke it. Stop doin' stuff like that!

It is vacuum operated. When you switch to "floor" or "floor/panel" this moves the door to route the air.
