Question 5.0 to 5.8 in '96

OK, probly a repeat here, but my search yielded limited results.

My father-in-law has a '96 F-150 4X4 shortie, 5.0. He would like to swap in a junkyard or crate 5.8 when his engine goes sour. Is this pretty much a bolt-in swap? I kinda figured it should be for the most part, except for maybe needing a new chip for the computer. Anybody had any experience with this?

Also, if the swap is a little more complicated, any recommended upgrades for the 5.0? The truck is used mostly on the highway, with occasional RV towing and mountain crawling.

Thanks in advance!

lol I know what you mean.

The father-in-law mentioned used to have another very similar truck with a 5.8, and he was much happier with it than he is this one.

He claims the 5.8 got better fuel mileage and towed much better, hence his desire to swap.

I'm inclined to agree, as I believe the 5.0 to be a much better car motor, the 5.8 a much better truck motor.

The same 302 that makes my Mustang scream around town sure seems like a dog to me in a fullsize pickup.

The front dress will not swap from the 5.0 to the 5.8, so you would need all the brackets for the 5.8. The fuel injection is different also, spacing and flow.

the brackets are all the same i just put a 5.8 in place of a 5.0 in my 93 f150 the only thing i had to swap was the intake manifolds including the fuel rail and the distributor my truck runs fine with the 5.0 computer but it is speed density it batch fires the fuel injectors, if the truck has mass air it is sequential and you have to change the injector firing order, but i belive it is just unplugging them and switching the wires around do a search in the 87-96 truck forum there are alot of posts in there about it

I have "had to" have this swap done on my e-150 conversion van. I just got it out of the shop ( I didn't want to do the whole VAN engine swap mess myself) and now it runs terrible! It "misses" hesitates, etc. The computer WAS NOT swapped, is this the problem, or is it a fuel injector issue? Jesse said you have to swap the order of the injectors? Where can I get more info before I spend even MORE money??

HELP!

the injector order must be changed if you have mass air, if it is speed density they are fine search the 86-96 truck forum there has been alot of discussion there about whether or not the 5.0 computer works i have had no problem the 5.8 i swapped in running the 5.0 computer

Thanks for the correction jesse. I had not tried but thot since deck height was diff that brackets wouldn't work. Must have extra holes for the diff. locations. jn- do you have a check engine light on?

i was told they wouldnt fit before i started my swap also, but i decided to try it before i went out and bought the 5.8 brackets and they all fit perfect. the only thing i forgot to mention is i bought a new belt for a 5.8 so i am not sure if the 5.0 belt will work or not.

If it's a 96' then it's mass air EFI.

FYI, the driver side accessory bracket has an extra hole in it that allows it to work on both engines. I'm finding out about all this good stuff myself since I'm doing the same swap in a '92. The can of worms just won't seem to go away.
