Socket Size F150 '01 Frnt. Caliper
Could someone tell me what size socket is used to remove the two bolts which hold the front brake caliper to the front wheel assembly on a 2001 F150 V-6. 3/4 too large 11/16 too small. 19 mm is too large 17 mm is too small. I'll have to go purchase and need to know for sure. I live a long way from tool source.
Also do you know what to torque these at when reinstalling. Any preference on type of pads.
Thanks,
Eric

Unfortunately, it sounds like you need to go shopping. You need the 18mm socket. Ford tries to individualize themselves from the other vehicle manufactures in some rather irritating ways sometimes. Hex heads on bolts is one of the ways they do it. Ford is the only American manufacturer that I know of that uses the 18mm and the 16mm sizes. Oh yeah, you might as well pick up a 16mm socket and combination wrench when you get the 18mm ones. You will probably want to get the 18mm in 1/2" and 3/8" drive. If the caliper bracket has never been removed, it will take a lot of torque to remove it because it was installed with loctite. Use loctite when you reinstall the bolts. You didn't mention why you were removing the brake caliper bracket. The caliper itself can be removed without removing the bracket, if you are just replacing pads.

I road to town and checked Sears, they were out of stock. Went to Lowes they had it. Go figure. 18mm was it. I figured that it wouldn't be 23/32, just too wierd and not sure local stores carry it. The pads had worn down to where the squealer sensor thing ama jig.
'You didn't mention why you were removing the brake caliper bracket. The caliper itself can be removed without removing the bracket, if you are just replacing pads.' Now you tell me. I went ahead to town/store after not getting any feed back on this question for a couple of hours.
So how do you remove pads with out removing the bracket.
Yes they were on very tight. Used an eighteen inch bar type wrench to get useful leverage. Glad to know for shure about the loctite. It makes sense.
Thanks for the reply.

Stopped at Advance before I saw your post they sold me Titanium mettalic by Bendix. Already put on one side. Have to wait for snow/cold to subside before doing other side. Hopefully they will do well. They were
45 for front. I thought it was a little high but will see how they hold up and stop.
