80-86 Axle code decipher

I am looking at 1984 f250 to purchase. The axle code is 31 per manufacturer's sticker on driver's door jam. Could someone please tell me the ratio for this axle. Thanks.

Unfortionately, axle code 31 is not listed. I think 31 is a Dana 61 3.07. 33 is (at least in 85) a Sterling 3.54, and 35 is a Sterling 4.10.

Best way to find out is look at the tag or the BOM on the diff, or jack it up and count the revolutions.

Yes. That list for some reason is only a partial list mostly from 1990 and up. My 86 F-150 has a code of H6 which is a 3.50:1 limited slip. It is also not shown on that list.

Talking Gears ?

It could be a 3.00 gear in early 84. Get me a B.O.M.# off the axle and I`ll tell you what it is. Later Wilis

#31 is a Dana 6250# Capacity axle with a 3.07 ratio.
This is out of the 1985 Ford truck shop manual.
The only way to tell what model it is, is to retrieve the #'s off the tag affixed to the rear cover.

I'm am pretty sure that 8lugs is right. Sterling axles didn't have gears lower than 3.54s, so they carried over the dana 61 model. which had a different carrier for 3.07 gears.

I don't think ford changed the codes in '85, they just came up with different codes for the new sterling axles.

I just bought an '86. The owner's manual has the de-coder for the rear located near the trailer towing section. I don't have my book with me, but if you need info, reply and i'll bring it tomorrow

Its nice to have the info available. Btw, have any one of you seen the code "H9B" for differental code? It was on a 94. It was factory track-lok front and rear diff. weird to see that, but nice truck
