drop axle

ive been kicking around the idea of putting a drop axle up front and am not sure of pros and cons. how much drop will i be able to get and what about the tie rod? also is this option a pretty costly or inexpensive way to go? and im drivin' a 49 f-1

46yblock is starting off with a positive reputation.
My opinion is that the most you should drop your front end is 4 inches. Tubular axles with 4 inch drop are available. You likely will also have resulting interference with your cross steering and the engine and/or chasis components. That willl require shaving off the steering arm(s) from your spindles and buying bolt on steering arms with the corresponding drop. Your Pitman arm should be altered to maintain steering geometry. If the axle does not have spring pads that will have to be farmed out, and don't forget the lower shock mount. Nothing about mods of this sort is inexpensive.
