np271 transfer case specs
Well, I share what I know. (Which isn't much at all...)
The
2 Means 2-speed.
7 Means case strength. 7 being the highest
1 Means Mechanical shift. 3 being electronic shift
Knowing NOTHING about the NP241 but it's numerical designation, I'd say the NP271 has a stronger case.
The NP271/273 is a chain drive X-fer case. Is the NP241? Or is it gear driven?

Several months ago there was an article in Four-Wheeler about transfer cases. They did a comparison of the ones used by new trucks and the SD case is was the strongest one available in a production/consumer truck. Of course you can buy bigger/stronger ones, but it'll be an aftermarket unit.

Thanks guys. The information you provided has helped. Any idea as to the diminsions of the case? I want to drop one of these into a 1979 F350, but I am concerned about frame clearance. I can adapt it to the tranny but still have concerns. I notice on the late model F250 and F350's that the front differential has been moved way off to the side with just enough room for the spring to sit on top of the cast flange. It is at least 12 inches closer to the frame than on my truck. Did they do this to line up the drive shaft to the NV271? IF so, I think that the 271 might stick out too far to the side and hit my frame. Sorry for the ramble.
