I'm interested in any info from someone who's done it or from someone who tried to do it. If you know someone who's done it, ask them to post here. If you've seen a web page about it, please post the link.
If you are none of the above, no offense, but what you've heard elsewhere on the net really won't help me. There's a hell of a lot of bad information out there.
I have an 89 Grand Marquis that I put an HO motor in, and if I get an E150 with a 302, I'll probably pull the HO and fresh AOD out of my Merc and put the van motor & trans (with stock EFI off a car) into my Merc to sell it.
It WILL work, we did that same thing to an 88 F150 truck, just use the truck intake, and exhaust manifolds (or Van in yuor case) and all will be fine...

I'd want to use the HO headers and intake (or aftermarket performance parts). I'll do whatever adapting/modifying is needed.
In my Mercury, the stock EGR spacer is bored oversize to mate with the HO throttle body, and the Mustang HO headers bolt directly to a Mustang H-pipe which is hooked to a custom exhaust.
I want to do something along those lines with a van swap. Or else I'll just get a van that already has a 351 and forget about the little motor.
The HD351, is in most RVs and heavier vans, and trucks with a towing package. It's got larger throttle bodies (it's 2 intakes in a single plate, about 10mm larger than a 302s throttle pair). Possibly a better cam, and larger injectors. When I bought the van I now own, it would do 0-60 in under 7 seconds, and will still outrun most camaros. They get me off the line but in a mile or two I go right on around them.
