Front axle: 2002 F250

I have heard conflicting information on this, whether the front axle for f250's is a dana 60 or a dana 50. I originally heard that starting in 2002 it was a dana 60, but later heard the dana 60 was only in f350's and up. Although the rating for the f250 and f350 front axle appears to be the same. Can anyone shed some light on this?

The 2002s come with a dana 60 axle up front in both the 250 and 350. I have however heard that a few early 2002s, 2001.5s had dana 50s.

How can you tell which one you have ????

My truck was a 2002 purchased in 2001 so I'd like to know if mines the 50 or 60 . If it's the 50 I'm gonna make them change it .

Does anyone know what the specific difference between the dana 50 and 60 axles are? I've heard the dana 50 is a bit weak especially in the diesels but never found out what the weak link is.

Through 2001, Ford used the D50 on all SRW trucks regardless of whether they were an F250 or F350. During this same time, the F350 dually got a D60 axle up front. Now, for 2002, Ford has started to use the D60 in all of the trucks- SRW & DRW. There was a time, when the '02 models first started production, that Ford was depleting their inventory of D50 axles. So a few early '02 trucks that were built in Mexico still have the D50. Supposedly, all of the '02 trucks built in KY have the D60.

If I remember right, someone said the D50 has the D60 gears and D44 axles... or was it D60 axles and D44 gears? Anyway, the D50 is aupposedly a "hybrid" between a D44 & D60 and is plenty strong enough for our trucks. You just don't hear anyone claiming to break the front axle unless they are abusing the truck. Both the D50 & D60 used in SRW trucks have 5200 lb ratings so we gained nothing in weight-carrying capacity.

I haven't seen Ford claim that any specific axle is installed in the truck. So I doubt there will be much success in getting them to swap a functional D50 for a D60.
