I went to a professional boneyard today to get a line on a 460 for my '79 F-350 4x4. The owner is a Ford fanatic - to the point he has a GT-40 he bought a while back for 300 big ones. Anyway, he has some '93 or newer injected 460's there, including one with 30,000 miles on it. I now know how much I don't know. If I buy that engine [ $1250 + core charge] can I get an after market intake manifold that will fit it? Either carb or aftermarket injection? I then have to get a L&L kit or something to mate it up to my bellhousing [ I have a manual 4sp], as well as god knows what other parts. Is the heads on a later FI 460 have the restrictions that the 70tys engines had, and would I be better off getting a rebuilt carburated model? HELP!!!
Mil1ion- he had three- the one already out of the truck he identified as a '93, but he wasn't positive. He had a couple of 80tys carburated models there too. My problem with a pre 1972 model is having it rebuilt with a lower compression ratio for the octane rating we have today.
I have 4:10 gears, and I tow a 1500# cabover camper and tow a Samurai, and go offroad with the same. My 400m is ok until I hit grades, then it struggles.
