Another coilpak mystery solved READ!!

Hello Again Loyal Ford owners ,
an
This is another problem that I have seen at work and on my own
99 Expy . It is a leak problem that i think is being overlooked by ford . Had a expy come in with misfire , customer complained of misfire after a rain storm and after washing the vehicle . He claims he would always keep the hood down when washing ,so I
went to work with the trusty garden hose . I have noticed this On
my expy too, occd run and assionally experiencing a misfire after washing and after a good rain . First step was to open the hood and let the garden hose run on the windshield and let run down into the wiper cowl . Lo and behold , we have a leak right thru the fire wall over the right bank (passenger side ) of the injectors and spark coils . There is a ground strap attached to the firewall and it has two locating slits that the water just pores out of and drips right down on #7 and #8 spark coils and in this case , allowed water to go into the plug , coil hole . Also one of the mounting bolts that hold the braket of wire plugs and looms also leaks . After disconnecting the ground strap , fill the holes with rtv and cut the little locating tang off the strap and remount . Put a little rtv on the bolt before tightening . On the other bolt , just remove the bolt and mush a little rtv in to the hole and retighten bolt back in . Run some more water on the windshield and check for leaks . I also checked my Expy and sure enough , same prblem . My truck has never run better since stopping this leak . Washed it several times since with no prblems anymore .This I believe is another source of the early coilpak failure on these motors . I have heard that the heater hose will also leak on the coilpak , but how many of those cases are really the leaky firewall problem ??? When you check yours , just run full garden hose with out a sprayer on the windshield and do not let it splash over the rubber hood seal , just let it run down the windshield naturally and you will see it start to leak . This is a major problem that has been undiscovered at the dealer , until now . This customer was told by the dealer that it had a bad coilpak , the third one for him , and it was the same one over and over . He refused this time and brought the truck to me . after checking , # 7 coilpak was fine , although it had a inch of water in it , Hmmmm, where did that come from . What does ford do , Just keep replacing coilpaks ???? Gonna check my friends F-150 this weekend and see if this problem extends to the truck series , bet it has the same problem . Good luck on this One and hope it helps you . Thanks for your time gentlemen !!!

I'm sure your firewall problem isn't an isolated incident, but there are plenty of documented issues with the heater hose leaking on #4 coil pack.

I'll go ahead and add this finding to my FAQ, if you don't mind...
