Doing brakes can look very intimidating... but it really isn't that difficult. Get a good manual, either Chilon or Haynes, and take a look at what is involved. By doing it yourself, you will save a ton of money. What year Explorer do you have? Do you have 4 wheel disc or front disc/rear drum? If you have 4 wheel disc, I would definatly consider doing it yourself. The only time you need anyone's help is when you bleed the brakes.... but if you decide that you don't want to do yhe job yourself... I agree with 87XLT... find a good garage and take it there. Midas uses garbage parts and Ford will bend you over the barrel.

If you are unsure if you have rear disk or drums, it's best you take it in. Avoid dealers, they are pricy. If you are at all inclined to fix things yourself, then no better time to learn, and there's not much easier to start learning on besides brakes.

Thats some XLNT advice from 99Xplr about spending 15 bucks for a Haynes or Chiltons manual. It doesnt just apply to brakes either. Even if you never intend to do your own work, you should have an idea of whats involved so nobody can rip you off. In this case if a shop tried to tell you a 4 wheel brake job is 1000 bucks, you could say to them I dont think so, I looked in my Haynes and this is NOT a 1000 buck job. BTW, maybe Ford isnt making brakes the way they used to, but I did'nt do the first brakes on my 87 Ranger (60/40 highway/city driving) until 150K. What makes you think that you allready need brakes on such a new vehicle??

I would suggest seeing what Sears wants to do them also. They offer lifetime warranties and have very reasonable prices in comparison to other shops.

Garage wanted $948 to do the front and rear braked and rotors and the EGR valve. I did all of it for $110.
