Question Emissions question

Pa is starting emissions i was wondering if my truck would have an EGR valve? Its a 1977 Ford F-250 4x4 crewcab. original motor was a 400. Now the valve cover tag on the 400 said non catlistic. So i'm figureing it didn't ever have any kind of emissions. i know it don't say anything on the gas gauge and no flaper in the filler neck.

Only a PCV valve, you should be safe from the EPA people, pretty much, if it is 78 or older, or 79 and a f250 or bigger, don' worry about it, unless it is from CA.

It looks like all 77's should have an EGR valve according to my OEM shop manual.

You can find engine vacuum diagrams at auto zone's website. You can find a link in the links section of my FTE web page.

I went on the autozone site and looked at the diagrams but there was none on a 77 400. They show 77 351m. But thats not what i have. the valve cover has just a 400 on the tag. I know my 79 bronco has on the tag 351m/400. I guess the best thing i can do is take the serial numbers and get it checked.

I need the corresonding charcaters from your sticker.

See under the G , there is an 80.I need this number

Now, I need the digits right of the C (ie: 93J )

Then the number to the right of the R ( ie: 0 )

Get me that & then I'll sort it out.

78fordman's right, the f-250's aren't gonna be affected by the change. Plus, it's only a visual check, so you got nothing to worry about for a few more years.

They had egr, my friends 77 had it. Easy fix. The non-catylytic refers to the catylytic converter or cat in the exhaust.

Ok I found out what i got to do. My truck came threw with a 400 with pcv and egr. i pulled it and put a 460 in it. Now all i got to do is put an egr valve on the truck and it will be fine it don't matter if it works or not as long as its there. Then i had my 78 bronco checked. What a run around with this. Its all original 351m valve cover has non cat, NO unleaded fuel only on gas gauge, no flaper in the gas filler. The garage guy looked in his book and he said all 78's had cats but he knows that is not right. So i had to call Ford they had know idea what for emission stuff it came threw with from factory. So they told me to call a dealer and i did. They have the same book as my neighbor has so they said the same thing all 78 models had cats. But he also said thats not right. So he told me to call Pa emissions. I gave them the imformation and they said they will call me back in a couple days. They called back in a couple hours. (which i was totally impressed with). They told me that it did not have cats on from new. ( new that just needed proff i guess). They told me if anything don't have a flapper or anything on the gas gauge and is above 5900 gvwr that it probably never had cats. What a run around. I think they should of did alittle more checking around on this stuff before they stared emission testing. He told me when i go get it inspected if they won't do it have them call the pa emissions and they will staighten out. Seems to me they should maybe send out some papers exsplaining this to the garages who do the emission testing. But i guess that would be to easy for them.

If you change the motor in your truck, lets say i had a 79 f100 with a 351 and all of the emissions junk, and i put a 72 390 in it, would they make me custom fit an air pum, and egr system onto it? I think i would go insain doing that, usually i cut most of the junk off. Usually costs me more in fuel milage to keep it on, than to just take it off.

The way they explained it to me was say like my truck came with a 400 from factory and it had all the emissions on it air pump, cat, charcoal canister and so on. Now i pulled to motor out and put a 460 in it. I have to meet the strickest standards for that year. So the way i understand it is you would have to put all of it back on. I know its really sounds stupid. It really don't effect me that much because either way with both my trucks all they had was an egr and pcv.

PA nad CA emissions

At least all you have to do is a visual!!! Here in Ca. not only does ALL of the equipment have to work, the vehicle has to be strapped to a dynomometer and run with a tail pipe sniffer attached!!! This costs around $90.00 to perform the test.

Then they have all of these different types of test stations. Test and repair and test only stations. They send all of the potential gross polluters (read, every Ford turck ever built!!!) to the test only stations so that if you fail, you get labeled as a gross polluter and are in danger of losing your vehicle if you can't fix it yourself or find a repair place that will even LOOK at an old pickup.

I have been dealing with this crap for 20 years here in CA and it just gets tougher and tougher to keep old hardware on the road.

It gets easier if you just wait until it is 30 years old or older. Then, you are exempt from the smog test every two years. It is the time in between then that you have to worry. I am not sure about you guys but it sure is nice to have a big old truck to go to the dump and to Home Depot in!!!

I know some parts of Pa have the dyno test but i was told they are going to do away with it. Because with the newer cars can preform that test on there own when hooked up to the computer. And the way that they said to me is everyyear you lose a year like my truck is a 77 in 2 years it will be excempt from the emissions. but we'll wait and see. I know if you don't drive more than 5000 miles a year it is excempt.

My 78 Bronco is supposed to be exempt. It has a factory 400. The only emissions on it are the EGR and PCV and the items to control them.
