I got the truck back today and, sure enough, it was the #4 coil was bad. The dealer replaced under warranty. I'm gonna check the firewall tomorrow for a potential leak source. Thanks, everyone.
It's not just the 5.4, I've lost 4 COP's on my 2001 4.6 (not to mention the A/C compressor, oil press sending switch, EGR and DPFE). I've been told that moisture can drip through the exterior hood seams and that Ford is aware of the problem - for the COP. What can you do but regret buying a Ford.
Just been told that mine is the #4 cop. How hard are they to change? I'm not sure if you have been talking about a spark plug wire or just the boot on it. Dealer wants $515. They said:$90 bucks to reprogram. I hope that doesn't mean to just disconnect battery, wait a few, and then connect it back.
Let me know.
Mark
PS its been raining down here the past week.
Damn that's allot of coin. Mine cost me $245.00, not that that's a bargain but I think the dealer is totally ripping you off. This problem is ridiculous forget Ford if they don't do a recall.
Pretty funny, the last several times I went out to lunch on a day that it was raining the truck ran rough when I started it and the light came on. I went to the dealer and they told me the factory original type of coil used around 2001 and earlier has problems. The replacements are supposed to be better. They are easy to replace, don't pay $250 per coil at the dealer. It's just one tie down screw and the electric harness which clip on/off. Then just pull the coil out and insert the new one ($87 at dealer with TX tax - they will give a 25% discount if you ak for it) and reconnect harness and screw. It rained all day yesterday and I actually had to replace the #8 coil which I think is one of the hardest since it is partly under the fuel rail and harder to get to. 5 COP's replaced, 3 to go until I have all - hopefully - better quality COP's.

Kerdog,
#4 is at the rear passenger side. It's one of the more difficult to replace - but it's certainly worth the effort considering the savings (probably over $450 from the dealer quote). You're talking about replacing a coil that sits directly on the spark plug. It is not a plug wire - more like replacing the boot. Replacement COPS from Advance Auto, O'Reilly's, etc. run approximately $45 to $50 and perform every bit as well as the dealer part that is well known to "bite the dust" way too soon and way too often.
If you decide to replace it yourself it's the perfect time to replace the plug(s) while you're at it since pulling the COP is 90% of the battle. Be sure to replace with Motorcraft double platinum.
As far as the reprogram goes, yes...simply disconnect the battery for 20 minutes. It will clear the CEL and reset.
With that said here's a thread with instructions and PICS to help with your project:
gkbid, man that's the ticket! Thanks for the "how to" on the coils. From what I read I'm affraid that's what happen to the better halfs truck yesterday. Going to have the codes pulled tomorrow to be sure. Her truck is due to have a tune up and I'm sure glad I checked here first. Should have seen my face, "Were are the damn spark plugs?" Powerstrokes, my truck, I know about. This is totally different! Don't know if I have the time to tackle this or not but it looks pretty straight forward and fun to do. Besides she's paying for the parts! Not my idea. Thanks again guys. Bubba

Too Mental to list!
This looks like our weekend project replacing the coils and plugs. Can anyone help tell the location of the coils so I can help my husband with this project. We finally threw codes this week and I want to take care of this asap.
I have a 2002 f250 with the 5.4 and the same problems that everybody else has, is a nightmare with me. Runs good today and bad tomorrow. I have even but electral grease on the boots to help the sweat and it sill skips. So what do u do?
Same problem with sons truck..nothing wrong just rolled 100k..3 coils replaced now looks like another needs it..is it difficult to replace yourself?
Our new Ford COP’s, the Sultans of Spark(S.O.S.), have
been designed with both durability and performance in mind.
Please see them at: http://www.performancedistributors.com/soscoils.htm
Quality was the main feature we stressed when we went to the
drawing board on these coils.
By the way, for those of you who only need to replace a defective coil,
our SOS Coils are available separately.
