Chose the oil you want to use. Then if you want to see how it performs send a sample to Blackstone labs (http://www.blackstone-labs.com/) and get a true statement about how it performs.

Can you point me to where this is mentioned?

The phrase about the two differant types of oil came from the service managers mouth where we bought the truck. Dad is big on how will they try to screw you when something breaks and they try to pass the buck on to the consumer. The owners manual also says to run motorcraft.

Mine says motorcraft too. But then also say something like:

or other quality oil rated CI-4.

Although highly recommended by ford due to contractual reasons, they cannot hold it against you for using an oil of your choosing so long as it meets the recommended standards as defined by them - CI-4/SL.

hankhogie - would you please cite where I can verify that Shell makes Motorcraft oil? It is curious that Motorcraft meets the CI-4 rating and the last time I looked at oil Shell didn't. I wrote to Shell and they wrote back that their oil would soon meet CI-4 (maybe it does now). Why would they produce an oil for Motorcraft that was better than their own? I read in this forum several days ago that Conoco makes Motorcraft. What is correct?

Changed the factory oil out yesterday (3000 miles) and went to DelVac 1, 10 degrees this morning, she cranked over real easy even without the block heater plugged in. This is my first diesel, but if you live where it gets cold, it's hard to beat synthetic. I've been using Mobil 1 for years in my gassers.

The Ford engineer I spoke with at the Powerstroke Diesel Demo trailer, said Motorcraft is bottled by Conoco. And read the Diesel owner supplement. The oil must meet API CI-4. So, If it is API CI-4, it is approved.

I contacted the service manager at my local Ford dealership as to what oils meet 6.0 specs. He then contacted a Ford engineer who told him that Motorcraft and Shell Rotella T were the only 2 approved. The engineer also told the service manager that Shell made oil for Motorcraft (the Motorcraft name, but actually Shell oil). The service manager then passed this information on to me. You do need an oil that meets the anti-foaming specs for the 6.0 injectors.

hankhogie,
Like I said, I spoke directly to a Ford engineer and the engineer told me Conoco Phillips makes the Motorcraft oil products and went on to a big explanation of the rigid testing that Motorcraft requires of Conoco.

Motorcraft and Rotella are NOT the only two oils that have the antifoaming additives. Read The Manual.

Other than "he said, she said". come up with a good source. Prove me wrong.

hankhogie - this could go on forever! I would suggest that you and your "dealer" read the owner's manuel It speaks to viscosity for temperature ranges and oil rating desired CI-4. With that in mind go on the net and read specs on different brands of oil and performance test data. I am running Mobil Delvac 1 synthetic which meets Ford's requirement of CI-4. I learn something on this forum almost every day and hopefully if I blindly try to defend a technical issue based upon what someone told me rather than solid research I will get my knuckles rapped also! Several of us want the best oil we can find for the expensive 6.0 diesel and cost is not really a factor with me but that choice is for every owner to make. If a new owner would happen to rely upon the data in your post he/she would not make an informed decision. I mean this to be instructive and not to slam you.
