Temp gauge question...

On my 95 L my temp gauge is not working correctly. It doesn't work then all the sudden it comes up seeming to work. I talked with the guy that owned the truck before me and he said it was acting up so he took it into the dealer to have the sending unit changed and they said it wasn't the problem so they reset the ecm and he said it hasn't worked right ever since. He changed the sending unit and I have, no change. The thing acts like its dead then after an hour or so of driving it seems to work, but if you shut the truck off for even a second then restart it,it takes a while to come back up. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...
